CC - Policy on translation of cost of candidate statements - Internal File 050TO: HONORABLE MAYOR
AND MEMBERS
ROSEMEAD CITY COUNCIL
FROM: NANCY VALDERRAMA, CITY CLERK
DATE: AUGUST 3, 1999
RE: POLICY ON PAYMENT OF TRANSLATION COSTS OF CANDIDATE'S
STATEMENTS IN FUTURE ELECTIONS
During the discussion of the foreign language translation costs in the last election, Councilman
Taylor suggested that the City policy regarding payment for translations of candidate's statements
be changed. In the last election, the Council adopted a resolution that stated in part:
"Section 3. Payment
1. The candidate shall be required to pay for the cost of translating the candidates
statement in English.
2. The candidate shall be required to pay for the cost of translating the candidates
statement in a foreign language.
3. The candidate shall be required to pay for the cost of printing the candidates
statement in a foreign language."
If the Council wishes to make a policy change regarding the payment for the cost of
translations of candidates statements in future elections, a minute motion at this time to provide
direction to staff will be sufficient at this time. Staff will then incorporate any change in policy
into the election resolutions to be adopted by the Council before the next election nomination
period commences.
