CC - Item 2C - Presentation by the ECHO-SGV Community Public Health Team on Food Insecurity and Assessing Community Needs and Opportunity for ActionECHO SGV COMMUNITY PUBLIC HEALTH TEAM FOOD INSECURITY IN ROSEMEAD, EL MONTE, AND SOUTH EL MONTE June 2026 1 1 Community Public Health Teams (CPHT) is a project that brings together community-based organizations, health care partners, and Public Health staff. These teams work at the household level, conducting home visits to gather health needs and connect people to care. These teams also work at the community level, inviting people to participate in creating community action plans. 2 Herald Christian Health Center is a non-profit community clinic that provides medical care and social services assistance to uninsured, low-income, undocumented and underserved populations in the San Gabriel Valley. CORE is a global humanitarian aid organization that brings immediate aid and long-term recovery solutions to underserved communities in 27 regions worldwide. WHO WE ARE 3 Why Food Insecurity Rose to the Top *Data as of May 2026 N=40 8 n = 173 n = 139 n = 97 n = 90 n = 75 Food insecurity was the highest reported need, with 173 households requesting food support, showing that access to affordable and nutritious food is one of the most urgent challenges facing families in our community. 4 The Coalition Model To address food insecurity needs, we created a community network (also known as coalition) where community members, health partners, nonprofit organizations, DPH, and local partners can work together to improve food access, share resources, and respond to the needs residents are experiencing. Food Distribution + Pantry Coordination Educational Outreach + Awareness Leadership + Advocacy Coordinate disctutions, referrals, pantry events, and partner capacity (for volunteers, space, and resources) Share food resources, CalFresh support, nutrition education, and workshops. Elevate community concerns (what we are doing now) and identify long -term solutions. 6 Progress to Date: Building Food Access Together 200 — $100 Northgate grocery gift cards distributed to EBT-eligible households Bi-Weekly — Support at Catholic Charities food distribution events 100 — Grocery bags distributed at the Rosemead Recreation Center convening 60+ — Attendees reached at the El Monte Community Safety Meeting + mini food distribution In-Progress •Planning a large-scale food access event in August •Building a food resource directory to support teams and eventually community partners 7 Identified Need Food insecurity emerged as a priority concern through household assessments and community input. Built Collaboration A coalition was formed to bring together residents, organizations, health partners, and local leaders. Taking Action Hosting and co-hosting food distributions, establishing resource connections, community engagement, and directory development are underway.
