PKC - Item 5 - July 2026 Monthly Department Report ROSEMEAD PARKS COMMISSION MEMORANDUM TO: THE HONORABLE CHAIR AND PARKS COMMISSION FROM: TOM BOECKING, DIRECTOR OF PARKS & RECREATION DATE: JULY 7, 2026 SUBJECT: MONTHLY DEPARTMENT UPDATE AQUATICS Swim Lessons - Our summer swim lessons kicked off with the first session on June 15. This summer, we are offering a total of five sessions to help participants build their swimming skills and confidence. At the end of each session, participants will receive a certificate indicating whether they are ready to advance to the next level or would benefit from additional practice at their current level. Our second swim session begins on June 29 and concludes on July 9. We look forward to seeing everyone continue to grow, improve their skills, and gain confidence in the water throughout the summer. Recreation Swim - Recreation Swim is in full swing. Hours of operation at the Rosemead Aquatic Center are on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., as well as Saturdays and Sundays from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Recreation Swim at Splash Zone are Monday through Friday from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Splash Zone has also been busy with weekend rentals, as many families and groups are choosing the facility for birthday parties, celebrations, and family gatherings. We are excited to see the community enjoying all that our aquatic facilities have to offer. FACILITIES/PARKS GARVEY CENTER Senior Bingo - On Wednesday, June 3, the Garvey Community Center hosted the monthly bingo social. The activity included a snack and a beverage for each participant. Winners took home a $5 gift card; the coverall bingo winner took home a $20 gift card to Walmart. In total, thirty (30) seniors took part in the program. Senior Craft Class - The Garvey Center’s Senior Craft Class continues to inspire creativity, connection, and fun among local seniors. Through engaging hands-on projects, participants enjoy activities that help keep their minds active by improving memory, focus, and problem-solving skills, while also supporting fine motor development. Most importantly, crafting encourages self-expression, builds confidence, and gives participants a rewarding sense of accomplishment. On Monday, June 8, class participants designed and decorated 4th of July centerpiece. Using paint and flowers, each senior created a unique piece that reflected their individual style and creativity. The class Parks Commission Meeting July 7, 2026 Page 2 of 4 2 was filled with fun, conversation, and fellowship energy as everyone proudly showcased their finished projects. A total of 25 seniors participated in the class. Senior World Cup Social - Get ready to celebrate the excitement of the World Cup at our annual Senior World Cup Social! Tickets are on sale now at the Garvey Center for this fun-filled event taking place on Thursday, July 16, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. ADULT/YOUTH PROGRAMS AND SPORTS Summer Youth Basketball League – Parks and Recreation is excited to expand our Summer Youth Basketball League again. We are able to accommodate 30 teams and 300 participants for the upcoming season. League will begin the week of July 13 and games begin on July 25. Summer Camp Rosemead –. Summer Camp Rosemead just completed its 3 weeks of camp in the month of June. Kids entering 1st – 8th grade will enjoy weekly theme activities including arts and crafts, outdoor play, sports, games and weekly excursion to the Artsy Backyard, The Huntington and Mother’s Beach. Summer Camp will continue in July through August 14. Camp is held at Garvey Park Youth Center, Monday – Friday between 7-6pm. Lunch and snack is included. Summer Lunch Program – Parks and Recreation is partnering up with San Gabriel School District to host a Free Summer Lunch program at Garvey Park and Rosemead Park. Kids ages 17 and under will have an opportunity to receive free Monday through Friday between June 15 to August 7 at 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Start Smart Sports – Session #1 and Session # 2 of our Start Smart Sports series began the week of June 15. Parents will work along side Recreation Staff each week to teach kids ages 3-5 years old the basic fundamental skills, teamwork and sportsmanship. Soccer is currently hosted on Tuesdays and basketball is hosted on Thursdays between 5:30-6:30pm at Garvey Park Gym. We currently have 44 participants registered Adult Pickleball Tournament – The Adult Pickleball Tournament will be hosted on Saturday, July 18 at Garvey Park between 5-9:30p.m. with a FIFA World Cup Theme. Teams will be randomly selected and participate in a double elimination style tournament. All participants will receive a t-shirt. SPECIAL EVENTS 4th of July Parade and Carnival – The Annual 4th of July Celebration will return to Rosemead on Saturday, July 4, 2026. A full day event which starts with a parade along Valley Blvd., beginning at Muscatel Ave and ending at Rosemead Park. The park will host a carnival, live entertainment, and what’s 4th of July without a fireworks display. Food trucks and vendors will have an array of food for all palates. The City Clerk’s department will host a chalkathon contest, registration opens on June 1. Currently applications for the parade and vendor booths are being accepted. This year’s theme is “One Nation, One Community, One Celebration”. Art in the Park/Movie in the Park - Our Art in the Park and Movies in the Park is back for Summer 2026. Art in the Park will be held on Wednesday evening beginning July 8 to August 12 with the Parks Commission Meeting July 7, 2026 Page 3 of 4 3 locations alternating between Rosemead Park and Garvey Park. In addition, Movies in the Park will also be held on July 15, 29 and August 5 after Art in the Park. Yappy Hour: Join us each Wednesday evening beginning July 8 to August 12 in our all NEW YAPPY Hour events at Garvey Paws Dog Park! The event will give opportunities for pups and their people to mix, mingle and make new friends! This paws-tively fun gathering will feature off-leash play areas, dog- friendly treats, and refreshing “puptails”. The event will be held between 5-7pm Concerts in the Park – The summer concert series will return to the Jess Gonzalez Sports Complex and Rosemead Park each Friday starting in July. The series will last six weeks and will alternate between the two locations, starting July 10 and ending August 14. Each concert will begin at 7:00 pm. Jess Gonzales Sports Complex Friday, July 10 – Califas The Band (Oldies, Classic Rock, Latin Rock, Cumbias, Top 40’s) Friday, July 17 – Chico Band (Latin, Oldies, R&B, Big Band) Friday, July 24 – Parks Make Life Better Event – 80’s VS. 90’s (80’s & 90’s Hits) Rosemead Park Friday, July 31 – Abba LA (ABBA Tribute) Friday, August 7 – National Night Out Event - Stone Soul (Motown & Classic Soul) Friday, August 14 – Latin Soul Band (Old School, Rock, & Funk) Dive in Movie - Can you believe it will be Christmas in July?!? Join us for a relaxing night by the pool and enjoy a great movie with family and friends at the Rosemead Aquatic Center. The event will take place on Thursday, July 23. The movie showing will be the “Frozen”. Pool admission does apply, $1.00 for 17 years and younger, $2.00 for 18 years and older. The pool will open at 6:00 pm with the movie beginning at dusk. Shark Week Celebration - Come celebrate Shark Week and have a “sharkmazing” time by relaxing your fins which watching the movie “Surfs Up”. The event will take place on Thursday, July 23 at the Rosemead Aquatic Center. The evening will feature family-friendly games and activities. Pool admission does apply, $1.00 for 17 years and younger, $2.00 for 18 years and older. The pool will open at 6:30 pm with the movie beginning at dusk. Parks Make Life Better Celebration – The City of Rosemead will celebrate “Parks Make Life Better” month at one of the concerts this summer. The event will include arts & crafts, family games, inflatable bouncers, food, and special giveaways. The celebration will kick off with a special children’s concert. This event will take place on Friday, July 24 at Rosemead Park from 5:30 to 9:00 pm. Parks Commission Meeting July 7, 2026 Page 4 of 4 4 MISCELLANEOUS Special Olympic Bowling - The department kicked off our Summer Special Olympic Bowling on Tuesday, June 23 with a total of 18 participants registered. Practices are held at Lucky Strike - Montebello between 6-7pm. The program will conclude on July 28.
