CC - Item 5A - Consideration of proposals from Ms. America to persent in a high school - Internal Files Box 069TO: HONORABLE MAYOR
AND MEMBERS
ROSEMEAD CITY COUNCIL
FROM: FRANK G. TRIPEPI, CITY MANAGER
DATE: DECEMBER 3, 2001
RE: CONSIDERATION OF PROPOSAL FROM MS. AMERICA, SUSAN JESKE
FOR INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL PRESENTATIONS OF STUDENTS
AGAINST VIOLENCE & THE IMPORTANCE OF EDUCATION
At the September 25`h Meeting, the Rosemead City Council authorized the expenditure of $1,000
of LLEBG funds for the presentation of the aforementioned program to the Rosemead High
School. Since that time the Rosemead High School cancelled the program.
Staff and Ms. Jeske met with the City of Rosemead's three local Intermediate Schools, Garvey
Intermediate, Muscatel Intermediate and Temple Intermediate. They have agreed to participate
in the program. There are sufficient Local Law Enforcement Block Grant (LLEBG) funds for
the additional $2,000. Attached is a letter from the Ms. America Pageant, a letter from
Rosemead High School and a copy of the Agenda Item from the September 25, 2001 Council
Meeting.
RECOMMENDATION
If the City Council is in favor of the revised program scope, it is recommended that staff be
directed to coordinate the event with Ms. Jeske and the three schools, and authorize the
expenditure of an additional $2,000 in LLEBG funds for a total project cost of $3,000.

To review what we discussed, the speaker at the one-hour assembly program will be
Susan Jeske, the reigning Ms. America. Born and raised in Littleton, Colorado Mc.
America has traveled over 10 thousand miles per month presenting her Assembly
Program at over 75 high schools nationwide. Susan has been featured in more than 100
television programs, 25 magazines, over 100 radio shows and has sung for 7 U.S.
Presidents including President George W. Bush Inauguration last January. Her efforts
have been recognized not just in the United States but also worldwide. Last Jung of 2001,
Susan was Knighted as "Dame Commander" in Scotland by His Royal Highness Prince
Michael for her efforts to stop school violence and received the official title "Lady"
Susan Jeske.
At each assembly program Ms. America provides a special message encouraging students
to take a stand against violence at their school and in their community. She is directly
responsible for implementing Pledges across the country to prevent violence in Schools
and has received over 35 awards and proclamations for this program.
Per our discussion the cost is $1,000 per school for a total of $3,000.00. P1easF write the
check out to STUDENTS AGAINST VIOLENCE and mail it to the address above.
Payment is due two weeks before the assembly, which would be December 17, 2001.

A sponsor would be able to put their logo in the gym or behind the podium and be seated
next to Ms. Amenca at the assembly program. Susan will introduce the sponsor where
they will get to talk for a couple of minutes. The sponsor could.... "thank Ms. America
for coming to the school and that the reason why they sponsored the program is because
they really care about the students and would not like to have a tragedy like Columbine
happen in their community, etc. " I would even suggest that the local newspaper he asked
to become a sponsor.
I suggest that the City of Rosemead announce it to be "Students Against Notence" Day
for the assembly program and have a proclamation made that will be presented to the
School at the assembly program. The students really like this.
I gave you a packet that contained a press release that you can use to let the press know
about the event. Just print the press release onto your city letterhead.
Because there is a lot of time before the assembly programs take place, I would suggest
that you ask other celebrities to attend such as the Dodgers, Angels, Lakers or any other
celebrity that you feel the students would like. I would even suggest that you invite
Governor Gray Davis and his wife plus other local politicians. An example invite VIP
letter was given to you when we met.

Dear Mr. Tripepi:
DIANE BLADEN
Principal
• Thank you for considering Rosemead High School for the- School. Safety Curriculum
-presented by-Ms. Susan Jeske. After careful consideration-by my administrative staff
and the student leadership, we are declining the city':s generous offer. While we see
the value in the program, we feel the curriculum and the presentation is not appropriate
for high school students.
We hope this will not cause any inconvenience for you or the city. Please keep
:..Rosemead High School in mind for any other safety :presentations in the future.
Since/rely.
