WELCOME AND OVERVIEW
-LEADERSHIP IN AN AGE OF CREATIVE DESTRUCTION'
California cities are in a unique situation. They are laboratories for the future. And like
all laboratories, the experiments often involve destruction in order to discover and create
the new. As city managers, we have tremendous influence over the nature of the
experiments occurring in these laboratories.
Explore with a world-class thinker, writer and speaker the kind of leadership we will
need at the local, laboratory level in this age of rapid change if we are to help create a
better, more desirable future.
Speaker:
Paul Saffo, President, Institute For The Future, Menlo Park

CRITICAL ISSUES FORUM
The City Managers Department has made a bold proposal to enhance the influence of
cities and the League in the legislative arena. It would significantly change the way the
League lobbies and engages legislators, city officials and the public. It is one of the most
exciting ideas to come before the League in years. And it will take the active involvement
and support of city managers if it is to succeed. This session will be your best forum to
understand and discuss this idea and determine how it might be implemented. In
addition, several other novel ideas that affect city managers will be presented and
discussed. Plan on participating in this very important session.
Concluding Keynote Session
PUTTING IT ALL IN PERSPECTIVE
Conclude this meeting with our third world-class presentation, exploring how all the
ideas and changes we have been considering can be woven together into a practical and
functioning system and culture. Learn from a respected and experienced philosopher,
management consultant, author and lecturer how you can harness people's diverse
energies, values and needs to help make your city a vibrant and humane place for all.
Consider how these ideas affect you as a manager, and how you can benefit from and
apply what we have learned.
Speaker.
Peter Koestenbaum, Ph.D.
