CC - Item 4G - Street Name Change - Easy STreet To Merwyn c. Gill Way~l
TO: HONORABLE MAYOR
AND MEMBERS OF
ROSEMEAPPD CITY COUNCIL
FROM: BILL Cn;E, CITY MANAGER
DATE: MAY 22, 2002 .
SUBJECT: STREET NAME CHANGE- EASY STREET TO MERWYN C. GILL WAY
On May 20, 2002, the City received a letter from the City of El Monte requesting a street name
change. The proposal includes a request by representatives of the M.C. Gill Corporation to
change the name of "Easy Street" to "Mervyn C. Gill Way" in honor of Mr. Gill, the founder of
the M.C. Gill Manufacturing Corporation. The subject street is a cul-de-sac street that is located
within the boundaries of the City of El Monte, however this street takes access off of a portion of
Valley Boulevard that is within the City boundaries of the City of Rosemead.
The light signal masts include can signs that are attached to the masts, which are located within
the City of Rosemead, street right of way. Staff has reviewed the request and has concerns with
the proposed color of the sign. The letter calls for the sign to be high intensity blue whereas the
mast signs throughout Rosemead are a dark green color. The City of El Monte was contacted
and has indicated that the color change to green will not be an issue. As indicated in the letter
from El Monte, all costs associated with this project will be absorbed by the City of El Monte.
RECOMMENDATION
1. Staff recommends that the City Council approve the requested street name change.

Company History and Capabilities
The M.C. Gill Corporation is the world's largest manufacturer of original equipment and replacement
baggage compartment liner for commercial passenger and freighter aircraft.
We are also one of the largest producers of composite sandwich panels used for aircraft flooring in these
markets.
M. C. Gill excels in most other types of flat panel composites, including bullet resistant ballistic
laminates and interior panels for creating structures such as aircraft galleys and bulkheads. The company
is vertically integrated to the extent that it produces its own prepregs (woven and unidirectional), film
adhesives, honeycomb core, and resin formulations.
With sales exceeding $90 million, company products can be found on most original equipment
commercial passenger and freighter aircraft, and as replacement parts on virtually every major trunk and
regional airline in the world.
This is remarkable considering that founder and CEO M.C. Gill started the company in a residential
garage in 1945, and grew it into a worldwide business. He is a pioneer in the development of advanced
composites for use in commercial aircraft. Since 1945 the company has made nine major expansions and
currently occupies a large site in El Monte, California.
Research and development continues to be a priority at the M.C. Gill Corporation. We are the industry
leader in the development of phenolic resin based low smoke and flammability laminates and sandwich
panels. In fact, our percentage of expenditures per sales dollar for research and development is the
largest in the industry.
M.C. Gill Corporation subsidiaries include:
• Insoleq - M.C. Gill Corp. Europe Ltd. - Northern Ireland. Fabricates M. C. Gill raw stock panels
for drop-in-ready replacement parts and warehouses company products for distribution in Europe.
Castle Industries of California, Inc. - Ontario, California. A precision metal fabricator and
manufacturer of parts for the aerospace and commercial aviation industries.
• Alcore - Edgewood, Maryland. Manufactures PAA aluminum honeycomb core, 3D and flexible
aluminum honeycomb core, plus precision five-axis machining of honeycomb.
Alcore Brigantine - Angler, France. Advanced composites and honeycomb panels, aluminum
honeycomb and machined honeycomb.
