SUMMARY'
Attached for your. consideration is information regarding the League of California Cities
2009 New Mayors and Council Members Academy.
Staff Recommendation
Staff recommends that the City Council authorize the attendance, at City expense, any
Council Member, City Attorney, City Manager, or a staff designee.
ANALYSIS
Conference sessions will include: Legal Powers & Obligations; Relationship Between
City Council and City Manager Staff; Policy Role in Land Use Planning; Dealing and
Succeeding with the Media; How to Conduct an Effective and Respectful Council
Meeting; and AB 1234 Training.
FINANCIAL REVIEW
Expenses for. this conference is included in the 2008-09 Budget.

The 2009 New Mayors and Council Members Academy features a range of educational
sessions designed to meet the priorities and requirements of newly elected officials.
Networking and content rich sessions will maximize the value of this event.

The full registration fee includes program materials,
reception on Wednesday, breakfast on Thursday
and Friday, and lunch on Wednesday and
Thursday.
NOTE: All cancellations must be submitted in
writing and are subject to a $50 processing fee.
No refunds will be given for cancellation
requests received after Wednesday, January 7.
Also, hotel attrition costs may be billed to
attendees for late cancellations.
Attendee substitutions can be made onsite and
are highly recommended to avoid financial
penalties.
