CC - Item 6A - Joint ProclamationJoint Proclamation months; and Declaring the months of October as "Breast Cancer Awareness Month" and the month of November as "End Domestic Violence Month" October and November are National Breast Cancer Awareness and End Domestic Violence WHEREAS, In the United States, one out of eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and an estimated 211,240 new cases of female breast cancer were diagnosed in 2009 and that mammography is recognized as the most effective method of detecting breast changes that may be cancer long before physical symptoms can be seen or felt; and WHEREAS, Domestic Violence (DV) is a serious and violent social problem that exists in all economic segment of society, in all cultures, and in all countries of the world; and knowing that every nine seconds a woman is beaten in the United States, totaling more than 1.3 million each year; and WHEREAS, Soroptimist are in a position worldwide to educate everyone, especially women, that they have the right to feel safe and to live free from violence at home and in the work place and that they have access to breast cancer prevention information and services; and WHEREAS, the Soroptimist Workplace Campaign to End Domestic Violence and Breast Cancer Awareness are ongoing Soroptimist efforts to promote awareness, advocacy and action; and WHEREAS, Soroptimist, is an international volunteer organization for business and professional women who work to improve the lives of women and girls, in local communities and throughout the world, has launched a Region -wide campaign called "COLOR ME PINK (for breast cancer) AND PURPLE (for domestic violence) ", NOW, THEREFORE, the City of Rosemead City Council, does hereby proclaim the months of October as "Breast Cancer Awareness" month and November as "End Domestic Violence" month with special recognition to Soroptimists of Camino Real Region for their various contributions to the many communities for advocacy, action and awareness (dissemination of information).
