TC - Item 5B - Installation of Red Curb - 3823 Delta AvenueS5z
ROSEMEAD TRAFFIC COMMISSION
STAFF REPORT
TO: TRAFFIC COMMISSION
FROM: CHRIS MARCARELLO. PUBLIC WORKS DIRECTOR
DATE: JULY 12, 2012
SUBJECT: INSTALLATION OF RED CURB — 3823 DELTA AVENUE
SUMMARY
The Traffic Commission received a request from the resident at 3823 Delta Avenue to
install parking restrictions (red curb) on the curb separating her residence and the
residence at 3819 Delta Avenue. The resident claims that due to the small size of the curb
separating the residences, often times their driveways are blocked by vehicles that are too
large to be parked along that curb.
Staff Recommendation
It is recommended that the Traffic Commission recommend to the City Council that red
curbing be installed between the residences at 3823 and 3819 Delta Avenue to prevent the
blocking of driveways by vehicles that do not fit along that section of curb.
ANALYSIS
Delta Avenue is a north -south residential street that is approximately 40 feet wide. The
street allows for two way traffic and parking on both sides of the street, with the exception
of street sweeping restrictions. The speed limit is 35 MPH and traffic volume is minimal.
The resident at 3823 Delta Avenue has expressed concerns with vehicles blocking her
driveway as they are parked along a small section of curb that separates her home and
3819 Delta Avenue. Staff conducted field observations and determined that the length of
this section of curb is approximately 15 feet.
Most vehicles (especially trucks and sport utility vehicles) extend longer than 15 feet in
length. At this location, parked vehicles typically extend beyond the driveway apron,
blocking access from the driveway at 3823 and 3819 Delta Avenue. For comparison, the
typical length used for marked parking spaces is 20 to 22 feet in length. Installation of red
curbing should alleviate the parking problems and help provide access to both property
driveways.
