STAFF REPORT
TO: THE HONORABLE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL
FROM: JEFFRY ALLRED, CITY MANAGER
DATE: August 14, 2012
SUBJECT: PROPOSED ROSEMEAD 5K RUN /1 -MILE FUN WALK
SUMMARY -
Representatives of the Pasadena Marathon are asking that the City of Rosemead
consider co- sponsoring a 5K Run and 1 -mile Fun Walk in 2013. While a number of
details must still be worked out, they tentatively propose to conduct the event on
Saturday, February 9, 2013, with the start and finish of the race located at Rosemead
Park. The event would be at minimal cost to the City of Rosemead.
Staff Recommendation:
That the City Council approve co- sponsorship, with Pasadena Marathon, of the
proposed 2013 Rosemead 5K Run /1 -Mile Fun Walk event.
ANALYSIS
As City Council is aware, Rosemead has hosted a variety of competitive /fun runs over
the years. Prior to the recent Run for the Memorial, Rosemead used to host an annual
5K Run in the area of Rosemead Park. Representatives of Pasadena Marathon would
like to see the Rosemead 5K revived and have asked the City to co- sponsor the event
beginning in 2013.
Initial discussions are to start and finish. the race at Rosemead Park, as was done in
previous years. To limit the need for City and LASD staffing and minimize traffic
impacts, the course would be kept north of Interstate 10. The tentative date of Saturday,
February 9, 2013 creates no conflicts with other events and allows sufficient _time to
promote it regionally— Pasadena Marathon has access to a large number of runners
and hopes to draw 1,000 to the Rosemead race.
Pasadena Marathon has agreed to cover Rosemead's costs for Public Safety and
Public Services personnel. Their responsibilities will include finding event sponsors,
conducting registration, providing electronic timing, and a variety of other logistics. We
will assist in finding volunteers and with event coordination.
An event of the kind and magnitude proposed is certainly consistent with the City's

strategic goals. With the organization's expertise and minimal fiscal and staff impacts, it
is believed that the event will be a cost - effective and successful addition to Rosemead's
current special events calendar.
