INCOME TAX ASSISTANCE (VITA) PROGRAM AND THE EARNED
INCOME TAX CREDIT (EITC)
the federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) provides tax relief and higher take -home
income to low- income working families and individuals; and
WHEREAS, every resident earning less than $51,000 per year may qualify for up to $5,891 in EITC
which may be used to lower their income taxes or increase their income tax refund; and
WHEREAS, the state Board of Equalization and partnering colleges and universities provide free
income tax preparation and family services through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)
program; and
WHEREAS, free income tax preparation and family services events will be held at local colleges and
universities including California State University Los Angeles, California State Polytechnic University
Pomona, and Rio Hondo College (refer to attached schedule of events); and
WHEREAS, the local Board of Equalization District Offices in West Covina and Norwalk are
scheduled to provide VITA services every Monday and Wednesday respectively into mid -April (refer
to attached schedule); and
WHEREAS, increasing utilization of the EITC represents an economic development and economic
stimulus strategy for the community due to the fact that for every 1,000 residents who utilize the EPIC
represents a potential infusion of $5.8 million into the local economy; and
WHEREAS, the City of Rosemead desires to help in the effort to make these services available to
eligible Rosemead residents; and
NOW, THEREFORE, on this 8`" day of January 2013, the City Council of the City of Rosemead does
hereby encourage all eligible residents to take advantage of, the VITA program the EITC; and pledges
the City's best efforts to publicize and communicate these opportunities to eligible families and
individuals.
