PSC - Minutes - 01-31-13 The three-fold mission of Public Safety CONNECTIONS is to: Serve as a community “think tank” and “information clearinghouse” to prevent crime and combat the impacts alcohol and drug abuse in Rosemead. Assist in the effort to educate young people about the adverse effects of alcohol and drugs on their safety, quality of life, and future opportunities. Increase awareness of parents, grandparents and other caregivers of their responsibilities to help young people to avoid the negative consequences associated with alcohol and drug use. MINUTES – November 29, 2012 There was a motion by Ron Esquivel and a second by Roy Rosell to approve the Public Safety CONNECTIONS Forum November 29, 2012 minutes with the following correction under Brief Announcements, Roy Rosell: “City of Rosemead pass an ordinance to prohibit smoking in outdoor dining areas as the City of Temple City recently did.” Minutes were unanimously approved. 3. SIGNIFICANT LAW ENFORCEMENT INCIDENTS Lt. Tim Murakami provide updated crime reports including the following: • City of Rosemead, 2012 Part 1 Crimes have decreased by 19.5% as compared with the Temple Sheriff’s Station service area, which saw a decrease of only 4.96%. • Grand Theft Auto (GTA) has increased in the San Gabriel Valley. This is partly due to drivers leaving keys in eth vehicle while warming them up. GTA is up by 10.66% in the City of Rosemead and 13.5% for Temple Station. • We continue to find gambling houses throughout the city. Rosemead Special Assignment deputies are addressing the issue. • A recent family disturbance call turned into the discovery of a resident growing marijuana in her home. 4. PRESENTATION BY COMMUNITY ORGANIZATION Mandy Wong shared some highlights of her role/assignments at the Public Safety Center. One of them is Emergency Preparedness. She stated the City of Rosemead has declared 2013 as the year to “Get Ready Rosemead”. At the City Council Meeting in December 2012, City Council issued a proclamation to involve the community (businesses, local schools, faith-based organizations, residents, public and private sector) in preparations to be self-sufficient in an emergency. Some planned community preparedness events include: • County-wide participation in the Great Shake-Out • Safety Day Fair in April • Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training • School, students, and faculty awareness meetings, and • City-wide “Summer Survival” Family Camp-out Mandy also distributed a flyer in four languages (English, Spanish, Chinese, and Vietnamese) detailing 13 items needed to be better prepared for a disaster. She will electronically forward members the document to CONNECTIONS members for general distribution. In addition, to better understand and coordinate the efforts of Get Ready Rosemead 2013, an Ad Hoc Committee will be formed and a CONNECTIONS member representative is encouraged to serve on the committee. 5. CONNECTIONS ACTIVITIES FOR 2013 David Montgomery-Scott provided an overview of CONNECTIONS goals and activities (see attached) for the upcoming year based on October and November 2012 discussions. He also urged that Forum members be ready to commit time and resources as the sub-committee brings tasks and activities forward at future meetings. COMMITMENTS FOR IMPLEMENTATION OF AGENDA ITEMS The Ad Hoc committee will meet to develop specific action items to be presented at the next CONNECTIONS meeting for which forum members can sign-up to further plan, develop, and promote. 7. REVISION OF QUICK REFERENCE RESOURCE CARDS Mandy distributed a draft of the revised resource card for review. The names and phone numbers of local resources have been sorted by category have been made available in four languages – English, Spanish, Chinese, and Vietnamese. Mandy will make copies for members to distribute. Sergio Medrano suggested adding a little blurb about the CONNECTIONS onto the pamphlet. 8. BRIEF ANNOUNCEMENTS Wenli Jen announced that Youth Summit 2013, “You’re Youth, Your Time” is scheduled for March 23 at Columbia School, 3400 N. California, El Monte. Registration for the Youth Summit is available at www.surveymonkey.com/s/sgvyouthsummit or by email to Mike Paredes at sgvyouthsummit@gmail.com Nancy Eng announced education/training opportunity on Gun Violence and Mental Illness February 11, in Pasadena. She encouraged CONNECTIONS members to attend. Nancy will be recognized on February 13 for her volunteer work with NAMI. Nancy will forward training opportunities and upcoming NAMI events top Forum members via email. Roy Rosell informed members that a free clinic will soon open that will offer a variety of services to residents of El Monte, Rosemead, Temple City, Monterey Park, and San Gabriel. IT will provide more information as it becomes available. Roy also mentioned that he and others have been invited to the White House for their efforts to curb tobacco use. 9. PUBLIC COMMENT Ron Esquivel mentioned Rosemead School District Educational Foundation fundraiser “Mardi Gras” at Almansor Court on March ____, 2013.
