The three-fold mission of Public Safety CONNECTIONS is to:
Serve as a community “think tank” and “information clearinghouse” to prevent crime and combat the
impacts alcohol and drug abuse in Rosemead.
Assist in the effort to educate young people about the adverse effects of alcohol and drugs on their
safety, quality of life, and future opportunities.
Increase awareness of parents, grandparents and other caregivers of their responsibilities to help
young people to avoid the negative consequences associated with alcohol and drug use.

There was a motion by Art Landing and a second by Sergio Medrano to approve the Public Safety
CONNECTIONS Forum minutes for June 27, 2013. Minutes were unanimously approved.
Sandra Armenta suggested members review the minutes prior to the meeting and forward any
corrections to Mandy Wong prior to the meeting.

3. SIGNIFICANT LAW ENFORCEMENT INCIDENTS
Sgt. Moreno provided an updated crime report including the following:
• 32 arrests were made in connection with possession of narcotics and methamphetamine.
• A gunman was detained for petty theft and methamphetamine at Walmart.
• Extra patrols were done by the Summer Team.
• A miscellaneous warrant was given to a female who slipped a bag of methamphetamine in the tire of
a patrol car while detained.
• Parolee and motel operations were successful.
4. REPORTS ON ACTIVITIES FOR 2013 (I.E. PARENTING CLASSES PARTICIPATION,
DRUG/ALCOHOL EDUCATION FOR YOUTH, ETC.)
Johnson Yang shared that Asian Pacific Family Center (APFC) currently has parent classes in
Cantonese (Thursday), Vietnamese (Wednesday), and Mandarin (Saturday). Next session of parenting
classes will be held in September. There are 3 – 10 parent participants, but more are welcome.
As parent classes are publicly funded, Jeff Allred suggested expanded marketing so that more people
can take advantage. He believes that it might help curb substance abuse. In addition, APFC offers the
L.E.A.D. program for 13 -18 years old Asian/Americans. The workshop focuses on building leadership,
learning opportunities, and much more. Students can earned up to 1½ days of service hours for
attending.
5. SUMMER SURVIVAL CAMPOUT
Mandy Wong invited everyone to join the City of Rosemead Summer Survival Campout on Friday,
August 2, 6 p.m. to Saturday, August 3, 10 a.m. at Rosemead Park, 4343 Encinita Avenue. The mock
tent city evacuation will give residents an opportunity to practice sheltering in-place and, review their
own emergency plan, and to assess their level of preparedness. Families, including pets, should be self-
sufficient for at least 3-7 days with food and water. The campout will provide an educational opportunity
for all ages.
6. NATIONAL NIGHT OUT / EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS FAIR
The City of Rosemead Public Safety Department will be hosting the 30th Annual National Night Out
celebration in conjunction with an Emergency Preparedness Fair on Tuesday, August 6, 6 - 9 p.m. The
community is invited. There will be over 40 resource booths on public safety, crime prevention, health
and drug awareness, and emergency preparedness. Free hot dogs, chips, and bottled water,
complimentary of Target, will be available while supplies last. There will also be many give-a-ways.
7. BRIEF ANNOUNCEMENTS
Mandy thanked everyone for their generous donations and support to American Cancer Society Relay
for Life event on July 13 - 14. The City of Rosemead raised over $1,300 with proceeds going toward
cancer awareness and research.
Miguel Flores stated that Don Bosco Tech is planning a 12-hour Relay for Life to raise cancer
awareness on April 12, 2014, 6 pm – 6 am. Bosco Students and families (600) are very involved with the
event and raised approximately $12,000. Miguel asked if the City of Rosemead would be interested in
partnering for the 2014 event. Jeff indicated an interest in meeting to further discuss the possibility.

Johnson Yang said APFC Youth Council is looking for 8th – 12th graders to join. Meetings are held twice
a month and students from all San Gabriel Valley schools are welcome. Activities include assisting with
the planning and execution of next year’s Youth Summit, college tours (i.e., UCLA, Fullerton, etc.), and
involvement in the Got Skills event scheduled for May 9, 2014.
Louisa Day shared that she has been busy with parenting classes and recently became a member of
the Rosemead Chamber. The Guadalupe Pregnancy will host its next education class “Very, Very Early
Childhood Forum” at 1168 Rosemead Blvd on October 24 in partnership with the CONNECTIONS
Forum. Louisa asked to borrow a projector and Art Landing will see if he can provide one for her.
Art Landing mentioned the Kiwanis were busy with Relay for Life and that the Kiwanis newsletter is up to
date.
Sandra Armenta stated that she first mentioned a Beautification Committee to Jeff. At the August 27,
2013 City Council meeting, a Chairperson will be appointed to the committee. Meetings will be held
quarterly. The clean-up efforts and projects are much needed in the community, at schools, and at
churches. The purpose of the Beautification Committee is to:
• Assist the disabled and Seniors
• Pick-up trash
• Increase economic development
• Bring back the Beautification Award
• Bring back the Spadaro’s Christmas Castle
Karen Roberson from Family Promises shared they received three new families needing sheltering
services.

Meeting adjourned at 7:29 p.m. in honor of the 19 firefighters in Arizona.
The next CONNECTIONS Forum is scheduled for Thursday, August 29, 2013 at 6:00 p.m. at the Public
Safety Center.
