MINUTES – June 26, 2014 There was a motion by Jane Chavez and a second by Sgt. Moreno to approve the Public Safety CONNECTIONS Forum minutes for August 28, 2014. Minutes were unanimously approved. CITY OF ROSEMEAD PUBLIC SAFETY CONNECTIONS FORUM REGULAR MEETING ROSEMEAD PUBLIC SAFETY CENTER 8301 GARVEY AVENUE EOC ROOM THURSDAY, AUGUST 28, 2014 ROSEMEAD PUBLIC SAFETY CONNECTIONS FORUM MEETING MINUTES August 28, 2014 3. SIGNIFICANT LAW ENFORCEMENT INCIDENTS Lt. Somoano provided an updated crime report including the following: • Property crimes are still on the rise. Arrests are down for the month. • One stolen car for the week versus numerous stolen cars per day previously. • Shootings on Muscatel due to narcotic activity and victims were non-cooperative. • During a motel operation methamphetamine and marijuana for sale was found. • Stats update: burglaries are down 10%, robberies are down 10-15%, assaults are up 25% due to domestic violence. • Deputies were called to the Laundromat on Walnut Grove to assist patrons with a mentally ill gentleman that was disturbing patrons and the business. The suspect was arrested for attempted kidnapping. • The house on the 3200 block of Rosemead Place is a licensed and recognized half way home for Parolees. Deputies will continue to monitor and follow up. • An arrest for kidnapping was made related to a Domestic Violence assault that occurred on Charlotte and Klingerman. • Summer Enforcement Team consisted of six deputies and one sergeant that provided extra patrol and resources that contributed to the arrest of burglary suspects and a decrease in crime. • Deputies do monitor social media and that’s how some crimes and disturbances are prevented and/or solved. • Joe Basile was able to identify a tagger that tagged Rosemead Community Center in July. The damages estimated to be $10,000. 4. “PARENTS SURVIVAL GUIDE” DISTRIBUTION David Montgomery-Scott shared the revised Parent Survival Guide, which is at the print shop and should be available for distribution soon. 5. CITY OF ROSEMEAD YOUTH SPORTS PROGRAM David shared that Garvey and Rosemead Parks will have evening sports program (after hours); Basketball, soccer, baseball, and football will be offered but a lot of the offering will depend of the popularity. It is a community wide sports program. 6. COMMUNITY EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAM (CERT) Mandy Wong invited the community to attend the CERT training. The training is a 24 hour course consisting of 3 consecutive Saturdays, October 11, 18 and 25, and is conducted by the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The training will teach emergency skills to save lives and property. Upon completion of the 3-day training, a certificate will be received. This will enable CERT graduates for continuous training and to volunteer and assist first responders during a disaster when requested by the city. Applications are now being accepted and class size is limited to 35 participants. 7. COMMUNITY AREA WATCH UPDATE Lt. Somoano stated the Community Area Watch program is going strong. We have two more areas to cover before completion of the nine identified areas. The next two Area Watches are September 18, at Temple Intermediate, and October 16, at Evergreen Baptist Church of L.A. on San Gabriel Boulevard. The Area Watch focuses on crime prevention, community beautification and emergency preparedness. Recently, we added a few slides on domestic violence awareness since our assaults has been up and hoping to educate the community where resources are available, with emphasis on Alcohol, Drug and Mental Health issues. ROSEMEAD PUBLIC SAFETY CONNECTIONS FORUM MEETING MINUTES August 28, 2014 8. ADVANCED COMMUNITY ACADEMY Mandy announced the Advanced Community Academy to be held starting October 8 thru November 12, 2014, for six consecutive Wednesday evenings from 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. The prerequisite to the Advanced Community Academy is the Basic Community Academy. Topics for the Advanced Academy will be the specialized units in the Los Angeles County Sherriff’s Department: K-9, SWAT, Policy and Procedures, Gang Awareness, and a field trip to the Coroner’s Department. 9. BRIEF ANNOUNCEMENTS Sergio Medrano shared he has started his private afterschool tutoring program at the Garvey Community Center. For more information, he can be contacted at: sergiomedrano411@gmail.com. Louisa Day announced the Guadalupe Pregnancy Services’ series of classes and counseling presented by Dr. Paddy J. Baggot, M.D., on Toxic Fruits and Vegetables in Pregnancy beginning Wednesday, September 24 from 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. For further information, contact Louisa at gps.pregnancy@ymail.com Jane Chavez thanked everyone that attended “The Habit’s” fundraiser on August 11. The Pregnancy Help center of San Gabriel Valley will host another fundraiser at El Portal Yucatan/Mexican Cuisine in Pasadena on September 17. Fifteen percent of the money raised will go towards the Pregnancy Help Center of San Gabriel Valley, Inc. A flyer of the fundraiser will be sent via email. Lena Woo announced Asian Pacific Family Center Alcohol and Drug Prevention 101 workshop on September 25, from 4:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. at the Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library, 318 S. Mandy Wong thanked the CONNECTIONS members for their support and commitment at this year’s National Night Out and Emergency Preparedness Fair. The community has benefited from all the available resources and information provided at the booths. 10. PUBLIC COMMENT There were no public comments. 11.
