2. MINUTES – November 21, 2013
Changes to item #5 under other suggestions to change bullet point regarding opportunities for those in
transition to transitional assistance.
There was a motion by Art Landing and a second by David Montgomery-Scott to approve the Public
Safety CONNECTIONS Forum minutes for November 21, 2013. Minutes were unanimously approved as
amended.
3. LOS ANGELES COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT IDENTITY THEFT AND CYBER CRIME
Lt. Mark Stevens from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department from the Cyber Crime Unit shared
that cyber-crime is a world-wide problem. He indicated that there are 2.5 billion mobile devices in use.
He stated that the types of crime occurring include hacking, identity theft, corporate espionage,
intellectual property, medical identity theft, cyber ransom and child and adult exploitation.
Lt. Stevens recommends to backup all files onto a CD, flash drive, and/or hard drive. Always protect
personal information, mails, passwords, different passwords for every account and report all incidents.
In addition, to cyber security basic: secure your network, anti-virus software, software updates,
passwords, loose media (flash drive, internal drive, etc.,) and use of wi-fi for smart phones. For more

4. SIGNIFICANT LAW ENFORCEMENT INCIDENTS
Lt. Somoano provided an updated crime report including the following:
• Residential burglary activity is higher as compared to this time last year.
o Two houses were hit on the same day in the late evening hours and a neighbor called
Temple Station on a suspicious person. The suspect was arrested.
• Auto theft is also up compared to this time last year.
• Crime intervention and prevention measures being used include:
o Multi-language flyers are distributed around homes where burglaries occur asking residents
for information.
o Implementation of the Community Area Watch program. Meetings are conducted in each of
the nine neighborhood areas throughout the year. The Crime Prevention Team will educate
area residents on crime prevention, emergency preparedness, community preservation,
and available resources.
5. TOWN HALL MEETING UPDATE
Mandy shared that Sheriff Baca was scheduled as the keynote speaker for the April 3, 2014 Town Hall
Meeting at Rosemead High School. With Sheriff Baca’s confirmed retirement effective January 20, 2014,
Mandy asked CONNECTIONS members for input regarding the planned meeting. Following a brief
discussion, members agreed to postpone the town hall meeting.
6. RELAY FOR LIFE ON APRIL 12-13, 2014
Mandy shared that City of Rosemead and Don Bosco Technical Institute are partnering for this year’s
American Cancer Society Relay for Life at Rosemead High School track and field on. The event is
scheduled Saturday, April 12, 9 AM to Sunday, April 13, 9 AM.
We are looking for corporate sponsors, Team Captains, donations, and volunteers for the event.

7. BRIEF ANNOUNCEMENTS
David Montgomery-Scott invited everyone to join the City of Rosemead’s Lunar New Year and Chinese
American Valentine Festival at 9155 Mission Drive from 10 AM to 5 PM. There will be food trucks, arts
and crafts, vendors, family fun games, attractions, and much more. It’s a day to celebrate diversity in
Rosemead.
Richard Gabriel said the newly appointed principal Dr. Brian Bristol stopped by briefly during the Cyber
Crime presentation, but had to leave for another engagement. Mr. Gabriel mentioned that RHS would
welcome the return of a Young Americans production for this year.
Art Landing stated the Kiwanis calendar will be mailed out via-email soon.
Jeff Allred mentioned the Town and Gown Luncheon on Friday, February 21 at Panda Restaurant
Group hosted by Chamber of Commerce. The luncheon is to welcome the new University of the West
President and the addition of the Rosemead Campus of Pasadena City College.
Sandra Armenta mentioned the beautification project to take place on February 22 at 9630 Fendyke for
an elderly disabled homeowner. Volunteers are needed from 9 am -11 am and 12 pm -2 pm. For more
information on the project and/or if you would like to volunteer, please contact Sandra Armenta at
sarmenta@cityofrosemead.org.
Ron Esquivel invited everyone to join the Rosemead School District Education Foundation Casino Night
Event on March 15, 2014. Information and flyer will be forthcoming via-email.
Nancy Eng mentioned that May is mental health month.
