The mission of Public Safety CONNECTIONS is to:
• Serve as a community “think tank” and “information clearinghouse” on ways to prevent crime
and to combat drugs and alcohol abuse;
• Develop and promote positive and wholesome recreational activities and community service
opportunities for young people and their families;
• Coordinate with organizations that address human and social services needs to promote a
healthy community; and
• Promote and encourage emergency preparedness by all community members.

2. MINUTES – January 30, 2014
There was a motion by Jeff Allred and a second by Nancy Eng to approve the Public Safety
CONNECTIONS Forum minutes for January 30, 2014. Minutes were unanimously approved as
amended.
3. PRESENTATION BY COMMUNITY ORGANIZATION
Dr. Brian Bristol, Rosemead High School Principal had another event and could not attend. This item
was tabled for the March 27 meeting.
4. SIGNIFICANT LAW ENFORCEMENT INCIDENTS
Sgt. Moreno provided an updated crime report including the following:
• Commercial burglaries activity is higher as compared to this time last year.
• Rosemead Special Assignment Team did a parolee check and found 4 out 5 parolees were not in
compliance. Marijuana, methamphetamine, and cocaine were found to be in their procession.
• The Team has been proactive in arrests:
o Male found stealing fruit from a residential home.
o Vehicle was stopped for traffic violation and found methamphetamine in car.
o Methamphetamine and pipes were found on another suspect.
o On February 19, CODE officers saw a suspicious male carrying a bag of stolen cans exiting
from the laundry room of a home on Stingle Avenue. The male suspect was charged with
burglary.
• The first Community Area Watch meeting was well received.
5. CONNECTIONS 2014 COMMUNITY PROGRAMS
Jeff Allred reminded members of the CONNECTIONS Forum newly revised mission statement and the
importance of this CONNECTIONS group and its potential impact on the community. The CONNECTIONS
mission statement also aligns with our 2014-2015 strategic plan. Discussion followed after a brief
presentation of the strategic plan by Jeff and David Montgomery-Scott.
Jeff stated that parents are a key to reaching out to children. He indicated a need for the Parent Survival
Guide to be revised and distributed. Members are encouraged to provide input by emailing Jeff or Mandy.
6. COMMUNITY AREA WATCH MEETING, AREA 1 UPDATE
Mandy shared the Area Watch meeting for Area 1 was well attended. Three Powerpoint presentations
were shown to participants – Crime Prevention, Community Beautification, and Emergency
Preparedness as all align with our strategic plan.
Mandy encouraged everyone to attend future meetings and asked that any local churches or
organizations interested to hosting one of the Area Watch Meeting to contact her.
Nancy Eng asked if Mandy could send a monthly email reminder regarding the meetings.
7. SGV YOUTH SUMMIT
Wenli Jen shared about the 5th annual San Gabriel Valley Youth Summit for 6th – 12th graders on March
8, 8 AM – 3:30 PM, at Garvey Intermediate School. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. The event is a
youth conference and all students are encouraged to attend. Registration is only at 25% as compared to
this time last year. Wenli asked CONNECTIONS members to help spread the word.

8. BRIEF ANNOUNCEMENTS
Mandy reminded members of the upcoming 24-hour American Cancer Society Relay for Life at
Rosemead High School on April 12-13, 9 AM to 9 PM. Mandy invited all members to join the Rosemead
Team, “Rosemead Rocks Against Cancer,” or to form their own team and/or to create a
CONNECTIONS team. Donations can be made online at www.relayforlife.org/rosemeadca.
David Montgomery-Scott invited everyone to attend the City’s Annual Yard Sale on Saturday, March 8,
7:30 AM – 1:30 PM at SCE southwest parking lot. The Parks and Recreation Department is conducting
a community survey at the event (it is also available online).
Karen Roberson shared that Family Promise has assisted 40 families in the last two years – 49 adults
and 75 children. Family Promise will be having a fundraiser, “Empty Bowl” at the Sierra Madre United
Methodist Church, 695 West Sierra Madre Blvd, on April 26, 11 AM – 3 PM. Tickets are $30 pre-
sale/$35 at door. All proceeds support family Promise of San Gabriel Valley in assisting local homeless
children and their families. The bowls are hand crafted by local potters.
Art Landing shared details from the Rosemead Community Events Schedule.
Louisa Day shared the new hours of the Guadalupe Pregnancy Service. The hours are scaled down due
to the volunteer availability. Services parent education, quarterly educational programs by doctors and
educators on prenatal care, problem-solving skills, contraception, and family planning.
Sandra Armenta also mentioned the upcoming Relay for Life. The city participates to bring increased
awareness about Cancer and to help raise funds for continued research. It is also a time to remember
loved ones that have passed away and those that continue in their fight to live. Sandra, who is handling
the sale of Luminarias, encouraged CONNECTIONS members to purchase a bag for $10. They are
decorated, candle-lit, and placed along the Rosemead High School track during the Luminaria
Ceremony in remembrance of loved ones. The Luminaria Ceremony starts at 9 PM on April 12.
Jeff Foutz mentioned that they are looking for potential Eagle Scout projects and asked if any member
organizations if they are interested in having the boys do a project to let him know.
Dawn Rock shared that Heather Shotke, a Muscatel Middle School teacher, launched a movement to
help reduce the use of texting lingo by students as part of a month-long effort called “gramMarch.” Ms.
Shotke noticed students were using abbreviated social media language in school assignments and is
challenging them and others to refrain from doing so for the entire month or March. For more

Nancy Eng offered to bring speakers specializing in Mental Illness issues to Rosemead. Currently, the
City of Pasadena offers classes to the public.
Sergio Medrano mentioned he will support Relay for Life and may start the CONNECTIONS team or will
join the City of Rosemead team. He shared details of his own experiences in past events.
