MINUTES – May 29, 2014 There was a motion by Art Landing and a second by Jane Chavez to approve the Public Safety CONNECTIONS Forum minutes for May 29, 2014. Minutes were unanimously approved. 3. SIGNIFICANT LAW ENFORCEMENT INCIDENTS Sgt. Moreno provided an updated crime report including the following: • Rosemead’s Special Assignment deputies and the summer team provided extra patrols that have resulted in an increase in arrests. There was a recent arrest in Rosemead. 4. FINAL REVIEW OF THE REVISED “PARENTS SURVIVAL GUIDE” An updated revision of the Parent Survival Guide was provided to CONNECTIONS members. David Montgomery-Scott shared that the Survival Guide provides vital information for the community. Steve Rivera pointed out a typo on page 37. The Guide will be sent for publication following this final review, thus changes should be immediately forwarded to Jeff Allred jallred@cityofrosemead.org, Linda Ta, lta@cityofrosemead.org, David Montgomery-Scott, dms@cityofrosemead.org, or Mandy Wong, mwong@cityofrosemead.org. The anticipated date for distribution of the Survival Guide is fall 2014. 5. BRIEF ANNOUNCEMENTS Mandy Wong announced a 710 DAY Rally on July 10. A free public event hosted by the City of Alhambra. Mandy also informed CONNECTIONS members that booths are available for the National Night Out Celebration and Emergency Preparedness Fair on August 5 and asked members to email her. Louisa Day thanked everyone who attended their banquet. She stated the CONNECTIONS Forum was helpful in making contacts. The Guadalupe Pregnancy will soon host a breastfeeding class. No dates have been confirmed. Louisa invited everyone to the Arcangel Film Festival at the San Gabriel Mission Playhouse. Admission is free. She offered to send more details via email. Jane Chavez informed the group that they own a licensed copy of the movie “Give Me Shelter” It is available if anyone would like to borrow it. She also said that a fundraiser will be held at Paco Restaurant in Pasadena on July 14. More details available via email. Parenting classes will be held at the Pregnancy Center on July 7 and 21, 10-11:30 a.m. Finally, she said that the Temple City Chamber is hosting a Casino Night on August 16 to raise money to help remodel LASD’s Temple Station gym. Wenli Jen provided information about summer activities offered through the Asian Pacific Center. Art Landing mentioned the Kiwanis calendar will be emailed out shortly and CONNECTIONS members are welcome to distribute the calendars through their own email lists. Juan Tinoco shared that there are 400 students enrolled in University of the West. There has been an increase of 50 students per semester recently. The University has expanded its outreach to local high schools to promote enrollment. There is a Summer Breach Class, a six-week program to teach important life skills, coming soon. Juan indicated that the University also supports the City of Rosemead as a potential evacuation site. New student orientation is scheduled for August 18. Finally, Rosemead Special Assignment Deputies will in-service students on personal safety tips. Joe Basile wanted clarification on staging and street closures for the 4th of July parade. 6. PUBLIC COMMENT There were no public comments. 7. ADJOURNMENT Meeting adjourned at 6:45 p.m. The next CONNECTIONS Forum is scheduled for Thursday, July 31, 2014 at 6:00 p.m. at the Public Safety Center.
