The mission of Public Safety CONNECTIONS is to:
• Serve as a community “think tank” and “information clearinghouse” on ways to prevent crime
and to combat drugs and alcohol abuse;
• Develop and promote positive and wholesome recreational activities and community service
opportunities for young people and their families;
• Coordinate with organizations that address human and social services needs to promote a
healthy community; and
• Promote and encourage emergency preparedness by all community members.

3. SIGNIFICANT LAW ENFORCEMENT INCIDENTS
Lt. Somoano provided an updated crime report including the following:
• Some Part 1 Crime Stats YTD
o Robberies have increased
o Residential burglaries have increased
o Larceny decreased by 25% in part due to decreased in shoplifting
o Auto Theft increased by 1%
• With the passing of Prop 47, it is now a greater challenge to hold suspects on drug possession
charges. A rise in property crimes may also be attributed to Proposition 47.
• Two murder incidents occurred in Rosemead in late October. One of them was gang-related and the
other occurred at a party. An increase in area patrols have resulted in a decrease in gang activity.

4. 14TH ANNUAL GOT SKILLS TALENT SHOW
Wenli Jen shared that she would like to see more youth involvement in the Got Skills Talent Show. It is
open to 12-18 year olds. Auditions are in March. The talent show is May 18 in Monterey Park and
admission is $3. This is part of Asian Pacific Family Center Substance Abuse and Prevention Program.
The Youth Summit is scheduled on March 7th at Garvey Intermediate School. This is an opportunity for
6-12 grade students to learn about leadership, communication, police policies, cultural sensitivity issues,

5. NAMI – WORKSHOP FOR PARENTS AND CAREGIVERS OF LOVED ONE WITH MENTAL ILLNESS
National Alliance on Mental Illness – NAMI will be providing a free workshop for parents, caregivers,
educators, practitioners, advocates, counselors, volunteers, social workers, students, or anyone who
works with children and adolescents living with mental illness. Attendees will learn how to have children
assessed, the purpose of an IEP meeting, who should attend an IEP meeting, resources for special
needs children, and much more. Coordinating this workshop is Debra Arviso. For more information,

1st Annual Parent and Caregiver Conference on March 7 at St. Anne’s, 155 N. Occidental Blvd, Los
Angeles, 90026. Conference includes expert speakers and workshops for parents and caregivers who
have children with mental health diagnoses. Attendees will leave with vital information on how to provide
stability and guide a loved one to a healthy and exceptional life and how to diminish any stigmas.

6. AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY RELAY FOR LIFE
Mandy Wong mentioned that the City of Rosemead will be hosting the Relay for Life on April 25, 9 a.m.
– 9 p.m., at the Rosemead High School Track. This is a community effort to bring cancer awareness and
to celebrate more birthdays as we find a cure through research made possible by generous donations
from corporate and individual sponsors.

7. YOUNG AMERICANS MUSIC AND DANCE WORKSHOP
David Montgomery-Scott shared that City of Rosemead will host a three-day Young Americans musical
workshop at Rosemead High School on April 17-19. Rehearsals are scheduled from Friday to Sunday
and a live performance on Sunday. Meals and snacks will be provided for the kids. Donations are
needed to ensure that more kids can participate for low or no cost. With the generous support of the
Rosemead and Garvey Education Foundation, many of their students had the opportunity to be part of
this once-in-a-lifetime experience. We also need housing for 35 college-aged cast members. We are
looking at local hotels and/or any residents willing to open their homes.
8. BRIEF ANNOUNCEMENTS
Art Landing announced a major expansion of the Kiwanis activity. Builders Club will be at Garvey and
Temple Intermediate Schools. Key Club students are in needs of service hours and are available on the
weekends.
Wenli Jen is officially back. She will be teaching at Cal State Dominguez Hill on Wednesday evenings.
Jane Chavez mentioned two upcoming fundraisers for the Pregnancy Help Center of San Gabriel.
February 10, 11 a.m. – 10:30 p.m. at the Chili’s Restaurant in Monrovia, 630 W. Huntington Drive and
Valentines4Life “Baby Shower” on February 21, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., at St. Therese Church, 510 North El
Molino Street, Alhambra.
David Montgomery-Scott mentioned City’s Annual Yard Sale on March 7, 7 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. in the SCE
parking lot, 2255 Walnut Grove Avenue. Come see the treasures or bring your own to sell. To purchase
a stall to sell, contact David Montgomery-Scott at (626) 569-2160.
Mandy Wong invited everyone to come and party at the Relay for Life Kick-off Celebration on February
7, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., at the Rosemead Public Safety Center, 8301 Garvey Avenue.
Ron Esquivel invited everyone to attend the Rosemead School District Education Foundation’s
Masquerade Casino Night on March 21, 6:30 p.m. at Almansor Court in Alhambra. The proceeds from
the fundraiser go back to the students through efforts like the Young Americans workshop. For more

Debra Arviso is looking for a meeting venue to start a family support group in Spanish.
