The mission of Public Safety CONNECTIONS is to:
• Serve as a community “think tank” and “information clearinghouse” on ways to prevent crime
and to combat drugs and alcohol abuse;
• Develop and promote positive and wholesome recreational activities and community service
opportunities for young people and their families;
• Coordinate with organizations that address human and social services needs to promote a
healthy community; and
• Promote and encourage emergency preparedness by all community members.

There was a motion by Brian Lewin and a second by James Berry to approve the Public Safety
CONNECTIONS Forum minutes for June 25, 2015. Minutes were unanimously approved.

3. SIGNIFICANT LAW ENFORCEMENT INCIDENTS
Lt. Somoano provided an updated crime report including the following:
o Vehicle-related crimes are increasing
o Burglaries have remained steady
o Two Homicides
A fatal vehicle crash occurred on Friday at Rosemead Boulevard and Glendon Way.
It was caused by a DUI.
A mother shot and killed her son at the Valley Motel, suspect later called law
enforcement to report the crime.
Neighborhood Watch members called on suspicious persons. A suspect, with a
$150,000 warrant, was arrested. Additionally, an unidentified female was also
arrested.
Coyotes have been sighted in Rosemead and information on coyote awareness was
recently included in the monthly Community Area Watch meetings.
o There was a brief discussion on coyote awareness.

4. AUTO THEFT AND THEFT FROM VEHICLE POWER POINT PRESENTATION
Lt. Somoano gave a brief presentation regarding vehicle burglary prevention. The videos are presented as
part of the City’s Area Watch meetings.
5. BASIC COMMUNITY ACADEMY
The City of Rosemead and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Temple Station, are hosting a
Community Academy. Community members will have the opportunity to learn more about local law
enforcement. Classes are scheduled for Wednesdays, September 23 - November 4, 2015, at 7:00 p.m.
Topics include a presentation by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office, a tour of the Twin Towers
Custody Facility, patrol/sheriff traffic procedures, a patrol ride-a-long, graffiti/gang awareness, and drug
awareness, and basic governmental functions. Academy applications can be downloaded from city
website at www.cityofrosemead.org.
6. BRIEF ANNOUNCEMENTS
Mandy Wong invited everyone to the National Night Out, Emergency Preparedness Fair, and Back-to-
School Resource Fair on Tuesday, August 4 from 6-9 pm at Zapopan Park. The event will include free
hot dogs, raffle opportunities, and vendors. Sandra Armenta mentioned this will be our first Resource
Fair (Walmart donated 175 backpacks for needy students).
Wenli Jen mentioned that she emailed flyers to CONNECTIONS members. Asian Pacific Family Center
(APFC) is offering the LEAD program at 9353 E. Valley Boulevard, Suite “L” Room. It’s free and open to
the public. Speakers will address issues of identity and culture, leadership, effective communication, and
racism. APFC is also looking for local youth to join its Youth Council. For more information, contact
Wenli Jen at wjen@pacificclinics.org. APFC offers a number of free prevention programs for the
community. Clinical programs, however, may require health insurance.
Brian Lewin mentioned that Beautification Committee members are coordinating an annual clean-up day
in lieu of monthly efforts. Sandra mentioned that residents and businesses may apply to have work done

Sandra Armenta mentioned that Rosemead is hosting its first Farmers’ Market on Monday, August 3, 4 -
8 p.m. in the Civic Center. There will be crafts, food booths, produce, and more. She encouraged

everyone to come out. Further, the Moon Festival is August 22, 4:00 – 11:00 p.m. on Valley Boulevard.
7. PUBLIC COMMENT
Polly Low asked if there has been a change on the incidence of graffiti/tagging. Lt. Somoano said that
he will check with Probation Officer Gutierrez.
Wenli Jen requested extra patrol in the immediate afterschool hours at Asian Pacific Family Center.
There has been graffiti, window etching, and suspicious activity in their rear parking area.
The City recently succeeded in having an illegal marijuana dispensary closed.

Safety Center.
