The mission of Public Safety CONNECTIONS is to:
• Serve as a community “think tank” and “information clearinghouse” on ways to prevent crime
and to combat drugs and alcohol abuse;
• Develop and promote positive and wholesome recreational activities and community service
opportunities for young people and their families;
• Coordinate with organizations that address human and social services needs to promote a
healthy community; and
• Promote and encourage emergency preparedness by all community members.

There was a motion by Steve Rivera and a second by Brian Lewin to approve the Public Safety
CONNECTIONS Forum minutes for August 27, 2015 as amended. Minutes were unanimously approved.
3. SIGNIFICANT LAW ENFORCEMENT INCIDENTS
Sgt. Moreno provided an updated crime report including the following:

o Grand theft auto has decreased. Patrol shift has changed to 6 p.m. to 2 a.m.
o There was an altercation at Laundry Land.
o An attempted robbery in the 2600 block of Strathmore.
o The new ASAP vehicle that reads license plate has been a big help to law enforcement.
o China Bistro was recently broken into.
Sandra Armenta mentioned the crime mapping app and is very concerned with the high number of
crimes being reported in Rosemead.
Polly shared she had meeting with Captain Jacob and City Manager Jeff Allred to talk about
deputies and other resource deployment in Rosemead.
4. PRESENTATION FOR COTBER 20 MEETING ON SWOT ANALYSIS WORKSHOP
Mandy Wong shared that the SWOT (Strength, Weakness, Opportunity and Threat) analysis on Crime
Prevention and Law Enforcement will take place at the next CONNECTIONS meeting on October 29
and Captain Jacob will make a presentation on LASD Deployment and Resources for the City of
Rosemead. Members present were given a SWOT template to work on at home and bring to the next
meeting.
5. PARENT SURVIVAL GUIDE DISTRIBUTION UPDATE
Mandy shared that the Parent Survival Guide was introduced at Rosemead High School and Shuey
Elementary Back-to-School Nights. Interested parents were encouraged to pick up a copy at City Hall or
the Public Safety Center. An electronic version is now on the City website at www.cityofrosemead.org.
Mandy gave the members a quick tutorial to the Parent Survival Guide webpage.
6. YOUTH SPORTS PROGRAM
Recreation Coordinator Martin Gutierrez shared details about Rosemead’s Youth Sports program
including participation levels, offerings, and registration details.
Sandra Armenta asked about pool attendance this summer. Martin explained that the Splash Zone
reached the maximum capacity daily and Rosemead Aquatic Center attendance had increased,
especially night swim.
There was a discussion about expanding the Splash Zone.
7. COMMUNITY EMEREGENCY RESPONSE TEAM TRAINING (CERT)
Mandy Wong invited members to enroll in the CERT training on October 10, 17, and 24 2015, 9 a.m. -
4:30 p.m., at the Public Safety Center. It is a 24 hour class taught by the Los Angeles County Fire
Department to educate participants about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their
neighborhoods and train residents in basic disaster response skills.
8. BRIEF ANNOUNCEMENTS
James Berry mentioned that the city will be hosting a “Civic Pride Day” on April 30th and the project will
be the Savannah Cemetery. It is an annual community clean-up day. Lots of volunteers are needed. In
addition, the annual Christmas Decoration Awards are coming soon.
Sandra Armenta mentioned that Civic Pride Day will be held in conjunction with Earth Day.
Beautification Committee members are considering having a resource fair including document shredding

and bulky item disposal.
Oscar Gutierrez invited members to attend the Graffiti and Gang Awareness presentation at the
Community Academy on October 14 from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. at the Public Safety Center.
Ron Esquivel mentioned the Rosemead School District Educational Foundation annual Run/Walk event
on October 24 at Savannah School. For more information, contact Ron at rejn316@earthlink.net.
Nancy Eng distributed a flyer and shared details about upcoming NAMI educational programs. The
NAMI walk is October 3. If anyone is interested in being a part of Team Nancy, please contact her at
autumn818@hotmail.com.
Mandy mentioned that the Great Shakeout is scheduled for October 15. She encouraged
CONNECTIONS members to practice duck, cover, and hold at 10:15 a.m. For more information, go to
www.shakeout.org to register. On November 19, 2015 the County of Los Angeles Department of Public
Health, in partnership with the City of Rosemead, will be conducting a full-scale exercise to test the
activation and operation of a Medical Point of Dispensing (POD). PODs are designed to provide
medications, vaccines, or medical supplies to a large community during a health emergency to decrease
illness and prevent death. We are seeking volunteers to participate in the exercise as clients seeking
medication. The exercise will be held at the Rosemead Community Center, 3936 Muscatel Avenue,
Rosemead. Mandy will email members with more information.
Pastor Steve Rivera mentioned this will be his last CONNECTIONS meeting with us. He is leaving
Evergreen Baptist Church of Los Angeles.
