ROSEMEAD PUBLIC SAFETY CONNECTIONS FORUM MEETING MINUTES
January 27,2011
WELCOME and PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE—Ms. Sandra Armenia
MINUTES—October 28,2010
Motion by Ron Esquivel to approve the Public Safety CONNECTIONS Forum October 28, 2010 minutes.
Second by Sandra Armenta. Minutes were unanimously approved.
1. INTRODUCTIONS
The Committee welcomed two new attendees to the CONNECTIONS forum: Sergio Medrano,
Woodcraft Rangers and Miguel Flores, Don Bosco Technical Institute. Visitors were: Shirley Lew,
Evergreen Baptist Church and Joe Basile, Rosemead Resident.
2. "TO SAVE A LIFE"VIDEO
Daniel Sumarriva showed a 3 minute clip from the "To Save a Life" video. This video was purchased by
his church and he wanted to share it with the Forum to see if we would consider showing it to wider
audiences in the future.
The video depicts divorce, violence in the home, bullying, substance abuse and other factors that lead to
suicide in young people. According to Daniel, suicide is the fourth leading cause of teen death. He
indicated that numbers can be reduced with early intervention.
To Save a Life video is appropriate for ages 13 years and above. CONNECTIONS Forum would like to
preview the 2-hour video to better consider showing it to the community. It was unanimously agreed by
CONNECTIONS members that in lieu of our regular meeting scheduled for February 24th we will preview
the video from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with dinner provided. It was suggested that each member invite two
people to attend the video viewing.
3. RE-ORDERING OF PARENT SURVIVAL GUIDES
Jeff Allred shared that we are planning to order 5,000 copies for distribution. Information given to Mandy
Wong from Aileen Flores, the cost for 5,000 copies is approximately$3,334.00 including shipping and
handling, but excluding tax. Ron Esquivel shared that he has a friend that may be able to print the books
at a cheaper cost. Jeff said Aileen will get in contact with Ron for another bid.
4. SGV YOUTH SUMMIT
Wenli Jen shared that the 2nd Annual SGV Youth Summit is Saturday, February 26th at Garvey
Intermediate School from 8 a.m. — 4 p.m. There are over 100 co-sponsors, 52 workshops and
approximately 100 presenters. She asked if we would extend the workshop information and invite kids
from 6th to 12th grades to attend. The deadline has been extended to January 31, 2011 and registration
can be done online at http://www.survevmonkev.com/s/sovvouthsummit.

officers when they stumble upon a citizen who may need additional community resources.
6. PROJECTIONS FOR 2011
To re-cap our projections for 2011:
1. Participate in Rosemead High School Open House (4/20/2011): Larry Cecil commented that they
are still working on the logistics for Open House. He will provide more information as it becomes
available. Nick Nevarez's participation at Open House would allow him a larger audience with which
to share his DUI survival experience.
2. Future Town Hall meeting topics:
Signs and Symptoms of Drug and Alcohol and Intervention and Prevention Measures.
There were suggestions from CONNECTIONS members to add "Save a Life" video and Character
Development/Education for future meeting topics as well. For Character Development/Education we
can add the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens (offered by the Panda Corporation) and Cool Stuff
(offered by the Kiwanis).
3. Ordinance re: alcohol sales(ban sale of 40 oz.and "Four Loko" alcoholic energy drinks)
Jeff Allred will speak to Mike Eng's office to see it he would draft something to bring to the state
legislature's attention.
4. Facebook:
Wenli Jen has offered to create the Rosemead's CONNECTIONS Facebook page to include
threefold mission statement, list of member agencies, the parent survival guide book, and upcoming
events.
5. Broader distribution of Parent Survival Guide
The goal is to provide a guide to every family in the Rosemead and Garvey School Districts.
6. Expand Town Hall meetings to south side of town
Bulmaro Magallon from Garvey School District will assist with future meetings.

burglary in a way similar to our Neighborhood Watch program. She would like us to take our NW
