PSC - Minutes - 05-26-11 CITY OF ROSEMEAD PUBLIC SAFETY CONNECTIONS FORUM REGULAR MEETING ROSEMEAD PUBLIC SAFETY CENTER 8301 GARVEY AVENUE EOC ROOM THURSDAY, MAY 26, 2011 The three-fold mission of Public Safety CONNECTIONS is to: • Serve as a community"think tank"and "information clearinghouse"to prevent crime and combat the impacts alcohol and drug abuse in Rosemead. • Assist in the effort to educate young people about the adverse effects of alcohol and drugs on their safety,quality of life, and future opportunities. • Increase awareness of parents,grandparents and other caregivers of their responsibilities to help young people to avoid the negative consequences associated with alcohol and drug use. INTRODUCTIONS/WELCOME 2. MINUTES—April 28,2011 The Public Safety CONNECTIONS Forum April 28, 2011 minutes will be tabled for approval at the June 30, 2011 meeting per Jeff Allred. ROSEMEAD PUBLIC SAFETY CONNECTIONS FORUM MEETING MINUTES May 26,2011 3. HEALTH AND SAFETY FAIR"LEARN TO L O V.E." Mandy Wong drafted an itinerary for the "Learn to L O V.E."(Leave Out Violence Everyday)fair. We will offer seminars regarding relationships, bullying, domestics, and violence in general. These topics will lead into the movie"Save a Life." The committee members suggested the following to be covered under each topic: • Relationships—dating, interpersonal, parents/family(Asian Pacific Family Center) • Bullying —emotional, cyber, and physical (Probation Office) • Domestic Violence— (F.O.C.I.S.) • Violence in general • Conflict Resolution/Prevention It was mentioned by Sergio Medrano that Bob Bruesch and the Garvey School District will also be hosting a Health and Safety Fair on September 17, 2011. It will focus on general health and nutrition. Polly suggested combining the two events. Mandy will contact Bob Bruesch. 4. MILITARY CARE PACKAGES UPDATE Sandra Armenta shared that the military collection bins are now available at various location around Rosemead including City facilities and schools. The collection will continue through June 15.We hope to get care packages delivered around July 4th to let our troops know how much we appreciate their service to our Country. The winners for the best decorated collection bin that reflects the City's 4th of July's theme"Rosemead Honors Our American Heroes"were: 1st Place—Emerson School, 2nd Place—Muscatel, and 3rd Place —Savannah School. Sergio asked for three(3) bins for his afterschool Woodcraft Rangers sites and Josue Delgado would like a bin for his church. 5. WOODCRAFT RANGERS' SUMMER LEARNING EXPERIENCE PROGRAM Sergio Medrano and Pablo Garcia provided information about the Woodcraft Rangers' Summer Program for youth. PROGRAM Jane Wong discussed Asian Pacific Family Center's S.C.A.L.E. six-week life skills training for middle school students. PUBLIC COMMENT Mandy thanked Joshua Pena for volunteering to be the CONNECTIONS Facebook manager. He will load up all upcoming CONNECTIONS events and news. The Social Host Ordinance has been sent to CONNECTIONS members via email and Mandy asked if we can share the information with Rosemead families. Additionally, an e-alert reminder will be sent to residents in June. Sandra Armenta is scheduled to attend a conference June 21-23. She will bring back intervention program to share with the group. Joshua Delgado invited members to purchase fireworks from one of his church's fireworks booth, which will be located at Garvey and Walnut Grove and Mission and Muscatel. 8.
