CITY OF ROSEMEAD PUBLIC SAFETY CONNECTIONS FORUM REGULAR MEETING ROSEMEAD PUBLIC SAFETY CENTER �• 8301 GARVEY AVENUE EOC ROOM THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 2011 The three-fold mission of Public Safety CONNECTIONS is to: • Serve as a community"think tank" and "information clearinghouse" to prevent crime and combat the impacts alcohol and drug abuse in Rosemead. • Assist in the effort to educate young people about the adverse effects of alcohol and drugs on their safety,quality of life, and future opportunities. • Increase awareness of parents, grandparents and other caregivers of their responsibilities to help young people to avoid the negative consequences associated with alcohol and drug use. INTRODUCTIONS/WELCOME James Fujitani, of Evergreen Baptist Church, will be joining the CONNECTIONS forum. 2. MINUTES—August 25,2011 Motion by Sandra Armenta to approve the Public Safety CONNECTIONS Forum August 25, 2011 minutes, second by Wenli Jen. Minutes were unanimously approved. 3. PREGNANCY HELP CENTER OF SAN GABRIEL VALLEY Jane Chavez was not able to attend. Item will be tabled for a future meeting. 4. COMMUNITY ANTI-DRUG NETWORK (CAD) Jennifer Li shared about CAD, a drug-free program for youth designed to raise awareness and provide education on substance abuse. One effort, Alcohol-Free Family Events(AFFE), monitors events in the six target cities (Rosemead, Temple City,Alhambra, El Monte, Monterey Park, and San Gabriel) to encourage the absence of alcohol sales, sponsorship, and promotions. So far, all events observed have been alcohol free. Nancy Trinh discussed Y.A.L. (Youth Alternative and Leadership Activities)which provides activities for local youth to keep them safe and drug-free during off-school hours.Activities include the annual Got Skills! Talent Competition,Youth Summit, and the newly developed Open Mic Night. Johnson Yang spoke about Youth Media Literacy (YML)training students about the variety of media communication in contemporary culture and how to discern the real messages in alcohol and other advertisement efforts. All of these programs are offered through the Asian Pacific Family Center. For more information, call APFC staff at(626) 287-2988. 5. ASIAN AMERICAN DRUG ABUSE PROGRAM (AADAP) AADAP provides residential and outpatient programs as well as prevention. All programs are free and are based in Los Angeles. Young Baek, Coordinator for Outpatient Counseling, provided an overview of AADAP's outpatient program for ages 13 and over. Services individual case management, Group support, individualized counseling, acupuncture, and family support groups. Services are available in several languages. ROSEMEAD SCHOOL DISTRICT ANNUAL HEALTH AND FITNESS FAIR Ron Esquivel provided details about the event scheduled for Saturday, October 22, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Encinita School. It will feature a pancake breakfast, Run/Walk Against Drugs, and other activities. This event will help kick-off Red Ribbon Week. ROSEMEAD HIGH SCHOOL BACK-TO-SCHOOL NIGHT UPDATE Larry Cecil shared that Rosemead High School Back-to-School is scheduled for Tuesday, October 4, 2011. The event will begin with a Ribbon Cutting ceremony at 3:30 p.m. The"To Save a Life' video will be presented 4:00—6:00 p.m. in the gymnasium. Incentives are available for students who attend the screening. Refreshments will be served. 8. FAMILY FUN DAY FAIR DEBRIEFING Mandy shared that the Family Fun Day Fair was a huge success with approximately 1,200 people attending. Oscar Gutierrez shared that the Cyber Predator seminar with Deputy Farley was well attended. Mandy also expressed the need to make some changes for next year to improve attendance at other educational sessions. Sergio Medrano shared that an Information Booth should be available and staffed to communicate in multiple languages and that more signage should be posted. 9. NOVEMBER AND DECEMBER MEETINGS CONNECTIONS Forum members agreed to go dark in the months of November and December due to the upcoming holidays. 10. PUBLIC COMMENT Jeff Allred asked CONNECTIONS members to review a draft of the proposed Rosemead Graffiti Ordinance. The ordinance will be brought before City Council at their November 8th meeting. Susan Reyes from Senator Ed Hernandez's office shared of an upcoming Free Community Health Wellness and Safety Fair on October 8, 2011 at East Los Angeles Occupational Center, 2100 Marengo Street, Los Angeles. Wenli Jen invited all CONNECTIONS Forum members to Asian Pacific Family Center's 25th Anniversary celebration on October 26, 3:00—6:00 p.m. 11. ADJOURNMENT Meeting adjourned at 7:35 PM The next CONNECTIONS Forum meeting is scheduled for Thursday, October 27, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. at the Public Safety Center. Page3of3
