PSC - Minutes - 10-28-10 CITY OF ROSEMEAD sm PUBLIC SAFETY CONNECTIONS FORUM REGULAR MEETING ROSEMEAD PUBLIC SAFETY CENTER 8301 GARVEY AVENUE � � EOC ROOM THURSDAY, OCTOBER 28, 2010 The three-fold mission of Public Safety CONNECTIONS is to: • Serve as a community"think tank"and "information clearinghouse"to prevent crime and combat the impacts alcohol and drug abuse in Rosemead. • Assist in the effort to educate young people about the adverse effects of alcohol and drugs on their safety, quality of life, and future opportunities. • Increase awareness of parents, grandparents and other caregivers of their responsibilities to help young people to avoid the negative consequences associated with alcohol and drug use. Abel Moreno, LASD David Montgomery-Scott, Rosemead Parks and Recreation Mandy Wong, Public Safety Department WELCOME and PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE—Jeff Allred We welcomed a new attendee to the CONNECTIONS thrum: Principal Dawn Rock, Muscatel Middle School. MINUTES—September 30,2010 Motion by David Montgomery-Scott to approve the Public Safety CONNECTIONS Forum September 30, 2010 minutes. Second by Sandra Armenia. Minutes were unanimously approved. ROSEMEAD PUBLIC SAFETY CONNECTIONS FORUM MEETING MINUTES October 28,2010 1. INTRODUCTIONS --_ 2. TOWN HALL MEETING DEBRIEF Forum members in attendance expressed the success of the first Town Hall meeting on October 21s1 at Rosemead High School. The list of pros and cons from the Town Hall meeting: Exceeded attendance estimates (150-200) Create better visuals (diaries, pictures, etc. were Clear itinerary for facilitators not alwa s visible Better communicate areas of responsibility Promotional efforts rarents vs. communi resources Audio, et al"ditches" tern bora sound board Good parental feedback Direct seating to prevent scattered audience Worth repeating ushers Nick's image may have been perceived as 'too depressing" (balance with current photo) — Availability of Parent Survival Guide experiment with fl ers outh, adults Better attract/access residents on south end of town And a "hook" to attract youth (i.e., tie to Open Time/schedule aided good attendance House/RHS festival 04/20/2011 Better connect �ro�ram to related local resources Presence of resource tables Good program content (effective message and •resence of"affected" parents Information re: Social Host Ordinance 3. TOWN HALL MEETING IN MULTI-LANGUAGES UPDATE IN NOVEMBER There will be an encore presentation of the Town Hall meeting on November 4 (English/Cantonese/MandarinNietnamese)and November 18 (English/Spanish). John Crandall has connected us with two translators from his congregation: Pastor Duke Liao (Mandarin) and Tricia Wong (Cantonese). We are still looking for a Vietnamese translator. Mandy indicated that she will ask a block captain to assist. 4. FORUM CONSENT DATE ON MEETINGS FOR NOVEMBER AND DECEMBER 2010 The members of the CONNECTIONS Forum consented to not meet in November and December 2010 due to upcoming holidays. PROJECTIONS FOR 2011 Proposed Goals/Activities for 2011 Participate in RHS O.en House 4/20/2011 Future Town Hall meeting topics: Signs and Symptoms of Drug and Alcohol and Intervention/prevention Ordinance re: alcohol sales Ban sale of 40 oz. and"Four Loko"alcoholic ener. drinks) Facebook .a.e Broader distribution of Parent Survival Guide (one for eve Rosemead famil ) Expand Town Hall meetin.s to south side of town 6. PUBLIC COMMENT Lt. Tim Murakami slated that the energy drink"Four Loko"is the new trend for young kids today. The drink has a 12%alcoholic content. Forum members agreed that a Facebook page would be a great source of marketing our Town Hall meetings and upcoming CONNECTIONS events. Wenli has previously indicated a willingness to spearhead the project. Jeff Allred suggested that Nick Nevarez speak at Asian Pacific Center's 2011 Youth Summit. 7.
