The mission of Public Safety CONNECTIONS is to:
• Serve as a community "think tank" and "information clearinghouse" on ways to prevent crime
and to combat drugs and alcohol abuse;
• Develop and promote positive and wholesome recreational activities and community service
opportunities for young people and their families;
• Coordinate with organizations that address human and social services needs to promote a
healthy community; and
• Promote and encourage emergency preparedness by all community members.

There was a motion by James Berry and a second by Ron Esquivel to approve the Public Safety
CONNECTIONS Forum minutes for January 29, 2017. Minutes were unanimously approved.

3. INTRODUCTION OF ROSEMEAD CHIEF OF POLICE
Lt. Hahnlein has been with the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department for over 27 years. He has
worked a variety of assignments and worked at various Sheriffs Stations. Lt. Hahnlein is excited to be
the Rosemead Chief of Police and looking forward to serve the community.
4. SIGNIFICANT LAW ENFORCEMENT INCIDENTS
Lt. Hahnlein provided an update on crime activity, including the following:
o Smash and grabs are the latest trends for businesses. Recommendation is to the lock the
money in the safe and leave the empty cash register tray out.
o Increase in vehicle burglaries. Do not leave any valuables in plain sight.
o Fire occurred at the 8800 block of Valley at Doug's Liquor Store; possible arson and it is
under investigation.
o On February 6th, the Rosemead School District received a bomb threat which later was
identified as a hoax. Lt. Hahnlein had the handle on the situation and coordinated efforts
through the Temple Sheriffs Station, deputies, and Rosemead School District personnel to
worked endlessly and ensure the safety of the students. Ron Esquivel, Rosemead School
District School Board Member wanted to thank the Sheriff, City, and Public Safety for
coordinating the effort to keep the community and kids safe.
o On February 14th the Rosemead Special Assignment Deputies and the Probation
Department conducted a Probation Compliance check on the 3700 block of Strang Avenue
and discovered narcotics and several firearms including two AR-15 rifles, a handgun with
ammunition, and approximately 2000 pills. Two suspects were arrested in connection.
o The Rosemead Special Assignment Team assisted with a lead of a liquor store on Del Mar
and Graves which is used as a FLOP house by Lomas Gangs. Details are limited due to
current investigation. The location is currently being renovated and will soon be open for
business.
5. DISCUSSION ON SUB-COMMITTEE RESPONSIBILITY TO BE MERGED WITH CONNECTIONS
MONTHLY MEETINGS
Mandy Wong shared that in October 2016 the CONNECTIONS sub-committee was formed to work on
the SWOT analysis. However, the purpose of the SWOT analysis discussions at the CONNECTIONS
Forum meetings was to aid in the City's Strategic Workshop in 2016/2017.
Mandy mentioned that a lot of the "Think Tank" for the CONNECTIONS Forum can be done collectively
by all members at our monthly meetings so every member can share and make decisions together.
After discussions, dialogue followed, it was motioned by Ron Esquivel and second by James Berry to
have a whole committee come together for discussion and decision making and to dissolve the
CONNECTIONS sub-committee. Motion passed with one nay by Art Landing. Bill Manis said we can
bring it back to re-visit in a couple months.
6. REVIEW PROPOSED ACTIVITY LIST
Art Landing distributed a list of activities at the January 26th CONNECTIONS meeting and wanted the
members present to review and to see which proposed activity is attainable by the group. Discussions
and dialogue followed.
Jason Chacon recommended to have Bill M or Mandy reach out to the Rosemead and Garvey School

Districts Representatives and see what kind of trends/issues/concerns they are experiencing with their
youth. Once we compile a list we can create a "Task Force" if needed to provide guidance for that
particular activity. When that activity is finished the "Task Force" will be dissolved. A motion by Art
Landing for the Task Force formation and second by James Berry. Motion was unanimously passed
7. BRIEF ANNOUNCEMENTS
Mandy Wong and Jason Chacon shared and invited everyone to the gramMarch Festival on March 4th at
Rosemead Park from 12-4pm. There will be food trucks, games, and live entertainment for all to enjoy.
Jason Chacon invited everyone to Park Ribbon Cutting and rededication of Zapopan Park on Saturday,
March 11th at 10am. There will be a community walk on the new trails, healthy food, and odometer
give-away. In addition, the annual Yard Sale is March 4th and everyone is welcome to come out to look
for treasures. The Skate Park Plaza Ribbon Cutting and Grand Opening is March 25th. More details to
follow via email.
Juan Tinco wanted to invite everyone to participate in the American Red Cross PrepareLA on March 22
at Potrero Heights at 5:30pm. For more information contact Juan at juant@uwest.edu.
James Berry invited everyone to join in the clean-up effort at the Civic Pride Day event on April 29th. For
more information contact Beautification Committee Members, James Berry and Brian Lewin.
Bill Manis wanted say a shout out to James Berry for his laborious work at the Quality of Life clean-up
efforts of areas in the city that have blight. In the last six months, 40 tons of junk have been removed
from the streets. The Quality of Life team members consist of Sheriff personnel, Republic Services staff,
and city staff that give 2 hours every two weeks to help clean up the blight areas. If you are interested in
assisting with the clean-up efforts, please contact Bill Manis at(626) 569-2100. Also,there will be a new
store in town that will be replacing the Bath and Beyond at the Target Shopping Center. More details to
follow.
Judy Seki is here to represent Louisa Day from the Guadalupe Pregnancy Service.
Bill Alarcon said he missed seeing the goats in Rosemead. He enjoyed the goats last year as part of the
Civic Pride Day clean-up efforts.
Joe Basile mentioned sighting of new graffiti in town and Lt. Hahnlein will connect with him after the
meeting for information.
