INSTITUTE CONFERENCE ON PREVENTING VIOLENCE THROUGH
COMMUNITY POLICING, OCTOBER 13-14, 1998
Attached for your consideration is information regarding the aforementioned conference. Session
topics include: Intimate Partner Abuse, Community Responses to Domestic Violence, Problem
Solving in a Community Context, and Officer Safety Issues Related to Domestic Violence
Incidents.
RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that the City Council authorize the attendance of Deputy Bayer and Deputy
Jewett. 1

The Regional Community Policing Institute - Los Angeles is pleased to present this conference
designed for representatives of law enforcement agencies, local governments. and community-
based organizations interested in Community Policing strategies which effectively combat
violent crime.

The keynote speaker will be a representative from the Office of Community Oriented Policing
Services. United States Department of Justice.
TUITION
There is a registration fee of$15.00 which will offset the costs of refreshments and a conference
t-shirt. There is no cost for the training since it is funded by a grant from the Office of
Community Oriented Policing Services, United States Department of Justice. The deadline for
requesting a refund is 5:00 p.m. (PDT) on Friday, September 25, 1998.

PARTICIPANT TRAVEL AND PER DIEM
The Regional Community Policing Institute - Los Angeles will provide two days/nights lodging
and per diem reimbursement for any participant who travels over 50 miles to the conference site.
Travel expenses (e.g. mileage and airfare) will be the responsibility of each participant. The
federal reimbursement limits for lodging and meals in Santa Barbara County are $98.00 and
$=4.00 per day. respectively.
All requests for reimbursement require prior approval.
LODGING
The Radisson Hotel has agreed to charge conference participants $98.00 per night plus tax
(approximately $10.00). A block of rooms has been reserved, however, reservations must be
made by September 13, 1998 to guarantee the special rate. Please identify yourself as a
conference participant. The reservation number is (800) 643-1994 or (805) 963-0744. A listing
of overflow hotels can be obtained by contacting RCPI-LA staff.
ATTENDANCE ELIGIBILITY
The conference is open to law enforcement agencies, local governments. community-based
organizations. and community members nominated by their local law enforcement agencies.
Attendance will be limited to the first 200 applicants.
P.O.S.T. APPROVAL
The conference is P.O.S.T. approved and all sworn participants will receive Continued
Professional Training credit. All participants will receive community college credit.
