CC - Item 4D - Request from the California Federation of Women's Clubs stat f ep ort TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND MEMBERS ROSEMEAD CITY COUNCIL JY FROM: , FRROANK G. TRIPEPI, CITY MANAGE DATE: AUGUST 5, 1997 RE: REQUEST FROM THE CALIFORNIA FEDERATION OF WOMEN'S CLUBS TO INSTALL TWO EL CAMINO REAL ADOPT-A-BELLS WITHIN CITY RIGHT-OF-WAY The City has received a request from the California Federation of Women's Clubs San Gabriel Valley District to allow the installation of two (2) adopt-a-bells within the City's right-of-way (attached). The purpose of the bells is to identify the road known as "El Camino Real", that once connected the missions. Staff has identified two locations (see attached location map) that will meet the criteria established to place the bells. The bells will be purchased by the California Federation of Women's Clubs and matching funds from Automobile Club of Southern California, the California Automobile Association, and Caltrans. The bells will be given to the City with the understanding that the City will install the bell. The installation costs to the City will be minimal, about the same as the installation of a sign post. The dedication ceremony at the San Gabriel Mission is tentatively scheduled for the last week in October. RECOMMENDATION It is recommended that the City Council approve the request for the installation of two adopt-a-bells within City right-of-way. COUNCIL AGENDA Rptctytadptbell 001 AUG 121997 ITEM No. I v - J 592 Taylor Drive Monterey Park, CA 91755-6742 The Honorable Jay T. Imperial Mayor City of Rosemead 8838 E. Valley Boulevard Rosemead, CA 91770 Dear Mayor Imperial: Adopt-A-Bell is a special project of the California Federation of Women's Clubs President Sandy Morgan. She has requested the members of CFWC to again take up the banner to keep this important part of California History visibly alive by participating in the restoration of the mission bells along El Camino Real. This project is co-sponsored with the California Automobile Association, The Automobile Club of Southern California and the California Department of Trans- portation's Adopt-A-Highway Program. Each bell will cost approximately $1 ,000.00 to replace or restore. The CFWC clubs will have to raise $500.00. to replace or restore a bell. The rest of the money will come frau matching funds from the automobile clubs. San Gabriel Valley District Clubs, three clubs frau San Bernardino dino District and one from Sierra Madre, have all raised enough money to place 14 bells. We would like to have them placed going both west on Missij on Road frau the San Gabriel Mission and east along Mission Road turning south on San Gabriel Boulevard to the Pomona Freeway (I-60) . We would like to give your city as many bells as can be placed within your city limits approximately one mile apart. All we ask of you is to accept the hells and install them at each site. We need to know who owns the right-away along this route in your city for placement and permission frau your city to place the bell. Specifications are enclosed. The bell will be cast of iron and along with the bell staff will be delivered to your city. We are trying for a mid-September dedication date for these bells at a cele- bration at the San Gabriel Mission. All participating cities will be in- cluded among the special guest of the San Gabriel Valley District. Enclosed you will find a brochure with more details. If you need additional information, please contact me at 818/280-1848. I will be the contact person for all the clubs. We hope to hear frau you soon to start the process toward the mid-September completion.
