RE: VALLEY BOULEVARD STREET TREES
At the May 13, 1997 meeting, the City Council directed staff to save as many of the
existing eucalyptus trees as possible during the Valley Boulevard Improvements Project.
At that time, staff estimated that it was possible to save as many as 22 of the existing
eucalyptus trees.
As part of the design process, an arborist, along with a construction inspector, reviewed
all of the existing trees along the corridor. The existing root depth was determined where
possible using a probe. The number of eucalyptus trees that can be saved, based on the
recent field review, has been reduced to nine, with four others to be determined during
construction. In all, the maximum number that might be saved is 13. Attached is an exhibit
which shows the trees that can be saved in green, to be determined in yellow, and to be
removed in black.
As the Council will note, there are four trees that can be saved between Muscatel and Ivar,
two on the north and two on the south. Also, the four trees that can not be determined at
this time are in this area, three on the north side near Muscatel and the other on the south
side east of City Hall.
Between Ivar and Rosemead Boulevard, all of the Eucalyptus will be removed. Between
Rosemead Boulevard and HarULoma, one Eucalyptus can be saved on each side of the I
street. The other three Eucalyptus trees that can be saved are east of Loma on the north
side along the cemetery property.
This item has been placed on the agenda for further direction from the City Council.
Because this is a policy issue, there is no recommendation.
