ROSEMEAD CITY COUNCIL

RE: VALLEY BOULEVARD STREET TREES
This item was deferred at the September 9, 1997 City Council meeting. The attached
exhibit has been modified to clarify the status of the Eucalyptus trees along Valley
Boulevard.
At the May 13, 1997 City Council meeting, the City Council directed staff to save as many
of the existing Eucalyptus trees as possible during the Valley Boulevard Improvements
project. At that time, staff estimated that it might be possible to save as many as 22 of the
existing Eucalyptus trees.
As part of the design process, a certified arborist, along with inspection staff, reviewed all
of the existing trees along the corridor. The existing root depth was determined where
possible using a probe. The number of Eucalyptus trees that can saved, based on the
recent field review, has been reduced to nine, with three others designated as "possible
save" with final determination to be made during construction. In all, the maximum number
of Eucalyptus trees that might be saved is 12. On the attached exhibit, trees which can
be saved are designated by a green dot; trees which might be saved are marked by a
yellow dot and trees to be removed during construction by a red dot. Although all other
species of trees on Valley Boulevard can be seen on the exhibit, a designating dot is
shown for Eucalyptus trees only. The other species of trees will be removed and replaced
with Sweetshade trees as previously approved.

ITEM No. `G 4.

Page 2
As shown on the exhibit, there are four Eucalyptus trees that can be saved between
Muscatel Avenue and Ivar Avenue, two on the north side and two on the south side of the
street. The three trees that might possibly be saved are in this same area on the north
side near Muscatel Avenue. Between Ivar Avenue and Rosemead Boulevard, all of the
Eucalyptus trees will be removed. Between Rosemead Boulevard and Hart/Loma, one
Eucalyptus tree can be saved on each side of the street. Three Eucalyptus trees can be
saved east of Loma Avenue on the north side along the cemetery property.
Because the number of trees potentially to be saved has been reduced, this issue has
been brought back to City Council for direction.
Recommendation
It is recommended that City Council authorize the removal of all Eucalyptus trees except
the nine that the arborist has deemed salvageable.
