RE: APPROVAL OF SPECIFICATIONS AND AUTHORIZATION TO
SEEK BIDS FOR THE REPLACEMENT OF STREET TREES
ON OLNEY STREET
The subject project includes removal and replacement of parkway trees along Olney Street
between Brookline Avenue and Rio Hondo Avenue. Specifically, the existing maple trees
will be removed and replaced with Camphor trees.
The type of replacement tree for this project appears to be very important to the residents
on Olney Street because they want the trees to eventually canopy the street as the maple
trees have. To ensure that this concern was addressed, staff researched various trees
suitable for parkway use and found that Camphor trees would grow to meet the resident's
desire for an ultimate tree canopy across the street and yet meet City standards for
maintenance. This selection was discussed with the residents at the community meeting.

At the meeting one of the residents suggested that Fern Pine trees be planted. Both
species of trees, along with a couple of others, were reviewed with our Arborist, Mr. Dave
Hayes. Taking all things into consideration, especially the desire to have the trees canopy
the street as well as maintenance issues, Camphor trees are specified in the contract
documents to be planted.
The proposed schedule for construction is as follows:
Receive Bids November 17, 1997
Award Contract November 25, 1997
Begin Work January 5, 1998

Pursuant to the City of Rosemead's policy against commencing construction of major
projects during the holiday season, construction of the subject project is anticipated to start
on Monday, January 5, 1997. This is in order to avoid inconvenience to residents from
construction activities during that time.
The specifications have been reviewed and are acceptable to the City Engineer. The
Engineer's estimate for construction is $85,000.
RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that the City Council approve the specifications and authorize
advertisement for bids by the City Clerk.
