RIO PROMISE
Rio Hondo was selected as one of seven (7) community colleges
in the LA County Promises That Count initiative, which is a three-
year initiative to build on College Promise programs.
Rio Promise, launched in fall 2017, offers both FREE TUITION
and PRIORITY REGISTRATION for recent high school graduates.

BEHAVIORAL & SOCIAL SCIENCES
Rio Hondo College developed an MOU with Whittier College to
guarantee 10 Rio Hondo students majoring in Social Work gain
admission to their Department of Social Work. The pathway is to earn
a Bachelor’s Degree from Whittier College.

CAREER & TECHNICAL EDUCATION
Offering a four-year bachelor’s
degree in Automotive Technology.
Offering California’s first A.S. degree
in Hybrid, Electric Vehicle and Fuel-
Cell Technology.
We launched the TESLA START 12-
week intensive, technical training
program in March and graduated
our first class of TESLA service
technicians in May–all immediately
employed by TESLA!
CA Community Colleges Chancellor’s
Office awarded a SILVER STAR to our
Auto Tech program.

HEALTH SCIENCE & NURSING
Rio Hondo College’s highly regarded registered nursing
program received a GOLD STAR by the California Community
Colleges Chancellor’s Office. Graduates’ earnings rose 192
percent, 77 percent attained the regional living wage, and 100
percent are employed in a job similar to their field of study.

JOURNALISM AWARDS
El Paisano student newspaper received a total of 22 journalism
awards: 13 at state level and 9 in the Southern CA competition.

KINESIOLOGY, DANCE AND ATHLETICS
James Schmidt, a local high school graduate, wins the state championship for the 157 lbs. weight class.
Women’s Soccer wins their second consecutive South Coast Conference Championship.

PATHWAY TO LAW SCHOOL PROGRAM
Rio Hondo College received the Diversity Champion
Award from California LAW for excellence at the 2018
Pathway to Law Summit held at the University of San
Francisco.

GUIDED PATHWAYS
Rio Hondo College was selected as one of 20 California community
colleges to adapt the national American Association of Community
Colleges Pathways model to California.

POLICE ACADEMY
The Rio Hondo College Police Academy graduated two
separate academy classes last year, totaling 53 graduates
who have become police officers in more than 20 different
police departments in California.

PUBLIC SAFETY: FIRE & EMT
Wildland Fire Academy had
100% job placement. Many
of the graduates helped to
battle the recent wildfires.
EMT program completed
seven 8 unit courses with
more than 100 students
gaining National
Certification.

TAIWAN EXPERIENCE EDUCATION PROGRAM (TEEP)
Rio Hondo’s Computer Science Club sent 10 students to
study abroad at the Southern Taiwan University of
Science and Technology.
The five-week summer program promotes globalization
through a focus on culture, language classes, tours, and
community service.
