AQUATICS
Fall swim lessons started this month at the Rosemead Aquatic Center. Parent Tot
classes have been filled to capacity. Rosemead Rapids are off to a great start this
month with 115 paid participants for the month of October. Mermaid/Merman Academy
is now being offered. The new fun mermaid/merman class will give students the
opportunity to swim as the Mer people do, along with fun filled activities. Fall classes did
not fill up, but we are hopeful the word will get out and the Spring classes will fill.
New pool tarps were delivered to the Rosemead Aquatic Center on October 15. The
tarps were donated by The Newhall Land and Farming Company and were installed by
Knorr Systems INC. New tarps would have cost the city thousands of dollars. We were
very fortunate that Knorr Systems introduced us to the donors. Knorr will also be
conducting an Aquatic staff training to ensure staff can properly install and remove the
tarps.
FACILITIES/PARKS
Garvey Community Center- Participants at the Garvey Center took part in the Great
ShakeOut on Thursday, October 17. The Great ShakeOut is a state-wide earthquake
drill. There were approximately 50 older adults who participated in the drill. They did
well with the drop, cover and hold drill and evacuated quickly to the meeting site located
on the North parking lot. Garvey Center staff did a tremendous job in coordinating and
executing the drill.
Attendance for the lunch program and monthly bingo stayed steady during the month of
October. The arts and crafts workshop for the month also stayed steady. The group
made Halloween pumpkins out of wine corks. The Garvey Center hosted a Monsters
Inc themed Spooktacular on October 24. The event consisted of lunch, entertainment,
dancing and a costume contest. The coming months will be very exciting at the Garvey
Center as staff gears up for the holidays.
The older adult excursions went very well during the month of October. The trip to Big
Bear for their annual Oktoberfest seemed to be the popular choice. Travelers will have
a chance to enjoy excursions to Old Town San Diego and Camarillo in November.
Upgrades continue at the Garvey Center. Staff is working on replacing lighting in two of
the rooms to LED lighting. The center will also have a new water fountain/water bottle
fill station installed during November. The new additions are sure to be a hit with all the
patrons at the Garvey Center.
Garvey Park- The Garvey Park restroom renovation project will begin on Friday,
November 1. The project is expected to be completed by the Spring of 2020. Due to
