CC - Item 5A - Preliminary Valley Boulevard Tree Planting Concepts S EinMdOr/L.„),11® .f ,. stafp0 , TO: HONORABLE MAYOR - AND MEMBERS ROSEMEAD CITY COUNCIL FROM: NK G. TRIPEPI, CITY MANAGE DATE: APRIL 1, 1997 RE: PRELIMINARY VALLEY BOULEVARD TREE PLANTING CONCEPTS Attached for the City Council's consideration are three preliminary concepts for the type of street trees to be planted along Valley Boulevard. It is proposed to plant 36-inch box trees along the entire street. Although the palm trees are more expensive to purchase, the installation cost for each type is approximately the same since the palm tree does not require a root barrier. Following is size and growth characteristics for each type of tree: Hawthorne: 12 feet in height at planting; grows 6 inches per year to maximum height of 20 feet. Sweetshade: 16 feet in height at planting; grows 11/2 feet per year to maximum height of 40-50 feet. Palm: 16 feet in height at planting; grows 1 foot per year to maximum height of 50-60 feet. Staff is seeking the Council's input on the preliminary concepts prior to presentation of alternatives for City Council's consideration. FGT:fw rptcty\valley05.tre COUNCIL AGENDA. Some of the existing trees may be adversely affected and could require replacement. Some portions of Valley Boulevard offer the opportunity for new street tree planting,.while others should be replanted with species that are less likely to contribute to pavement • damage. • Replacement tree alternatives have been selected considering their ultimate size, maintenance characteristics, appearance, water use, hardiness, and sign viewability. Tree wells would be 3' wide by 6' long. A single species may be planted the entire length of Valley Boulevard, or species may be alternated by block to provide variety.
