DATE: JUNE 6, 2023 SUBJECT: RECREATION CLASSES AND PROGRAMS UPDATE
SUMMARY At the May 2, 2023, Parks Commission meeting, Chair Chavez requested an update on non-sport
recreation classes and program participation. The purpose of this report is to provide the information that was requested from the Parks Commission. BACKGROUND
The following information was taken from the current 2023 Summer registration for classes,
activities, and programs. These classes and programs are held at the Rosemead Community Recreation Center, Garvey Center, Rosemead Aquatic Center, Garvey Park Youth Center, Garvey Park Gymnasium, Splash Zone at Garvey Park, and Rosemead Park.
Summer Classes:
The Department offers a variety of classes which consist of enrichment, music, fitness, dance/performing arts, martial arts, and sports. Class registration began on Monday, May 22.
All classes are filling up with the following being the most popular:
• Flower Arrangement Class
• Chinese Brush Painting
• Kids Love Chinese
• Piano
• All Dance Classes
Senior excursions continue to grow in participation as people are feeling more comfortable with traveling. Highlight trips for this summer are Solvang, Fantasy Springs Casino, OC Fair, and Old Town San Diego.

Summer Programs:
Summer Camp Rosemead – Summer Camp Rosemead is right around the corner! Participants are excited for the weekly themed arts & crafts activities, outdoor play, sports, and weekly excursions that begin June 12. Camp is held Monday through Friday between 7am – 6pm at
Garvey Park Youth Center. With COVID-19 restrictions lifted, Parks and Recreation was able to expand the program from 20 to 30 participants each week. Camp is currently full for all 9 weeks with 270 participants! Summer Lunch Program – The Summer Lunch Program is back beginning June 12! Parks and
Recreation is partnering up with San Gabriel School District to provide free lunches to kids ages 17 years and under for the summer. The lunch program is held next to Garvey Park Gym and Rosemead Aquatic Center between 11:30am – 12:30pm Summer Drop-In Recreation – The Drop-in Recreation will begin its summer schedule on June
12 and is held Monday – Friday between 1:00pm – 3:00pm at Garvey Park Youth Center and Rosemead Park. This program is free; however, participants must sign in and sign out daily. STAFF RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that the report be reviewed and filed.
