PKC - Item 3D- June 2023 Monthly Department Report ROSEMEAD PARKS COMMISSION MEMORANDUM TO: THE HONORABLE CHAIR AND PARKS COMMISSION FROM: TOM BOECKING, DIRECTOR OF PARKS & RECREATION DATE: June 6, 2023 SUBJECT: MONTHLY DEPARTMENT UPDATE AQUATICS Summer Aquatics Programs – Aquatic’s ongoing programs are Lap Swim, Aqua Fit, Adult Swim Lessons, and our Rosemead Rapids Swim Team. Lap Swim - Swimming is the best full-body workout. Lap Swim takes place Monday through Friday 5:30 – 8:30 pm and Saturday 10:00 am – 12:00 pm. Aqua Fit – Water fitness is a great way to exercise. Come join our Aqua Fit class on Mondays and Wednesdays 5:00 pm – 5:40 pm Swim Team – The Rosemead Rapids Swim Team is currently practicing Monday through Friday 5:30pm – 8:30pm and Saturday 8:00 –10:00 am. Rosemead Rapids ended the month of May with 165 participants registered. June Swim Team Registration is now open. Aquatic Recruitment/Training – Aquatic staff, along with Human Resources, are currently working on recruiting for Summer 2023. We are looking to hire Aquatic Attendants, Lifeguards, Lifeguard/Swim Instructors, and Assistant Pool Managers. In an effort to fill these positions, aquatic staff are preparing to host lifeguard training courses on May 12– 14 at the Rosemead Aquatic Center. This course provides participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies. Participants who attend all sessions of this course will obtain their American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification First Aid and CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer valid for 2 years. Four City of Rosemead Lifeguards have also completed Water Safety Instructors training. This training allows lifeguards to become swim instructors. Water Safety Instructor training certification is valid for 2 years. Summer Aquatic Facility Prep - Aquatic staff, along with public works, have been working on preparing both aquatic facilities for Summer 2023. Currently, staff are focusing on Splash Zone: circulation pumps for all systems are continuously being run to maintain them working properly, walk signs have been repainted, the entire facility including the roof has been power washed, and wet play equipment has Parks Commission Meeting June 6, 2023 Page 2 of 4 2 been buffed and polished. On April 19, 2023, Slide Guys Restoration Inc. completed the required annual maintenance work on the slides at Splash Zone. Splash Zone had its first private rental on May 26, 2023, for Rice Elementary School’s 6th grade promotion celebration. Water Safety Month- The month of May is National Water Safety Month, it’s designed to spread awareness about drowning prevention and educate youth about becoming safer in and around water. Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional injury-related death for children ages 1-4. Drowning remains one of the top 5 causes of unintentional injury-related death from birth to 54 years old. In order to spread awareness this May, we are committed to promoting water safety in our community by having our current swim lesson participants take the Safe Swimmer Water Safety Pledge to reinforce the importance of water safety, sharing helpful water safety tips through social media, Aquatics staff joined the Farmers Market on May 22, 2023, with games, prizes, and activities all promoting water safety. Youth Swim Lessons Registration: Walk-In Registration for all sessions will be Saturday, June 10, from 8am-12pm at Rosemead Aquatic Center. Starting June 12, registration will take place at Rosemead Aquatic Center, Monday- Friday, between 3:00pm-6:00pm for all sessions, if space is available. FACILITIES/PARKS Garvey Community Center Senior Craft Class – The Garvey Community Center hosted its senior craft class on Monday, May 8th, during which each participant made a Mother’s Day-themed craft. In total, twenty-three seniors took part in the activity. The next craft class will be on Monday, June 12th, from 12:00pm to 1:00pm. Senior Bingo – On Wednesday, May 3, 2023, the Garvey Community Center hosted its monthly Bingo Social. The activity included chicken salad and a beverage for each participant. General winners took home a $5 gift card, and the overall bingo winner took home a $20 gift card. In total, twenty-six seniors took part in the program. Senior Lunch Program Enhancements – The Senior Lunch Program has been a staple in the lives of seniors in the Rosemead community. The program supplies prepared nutritious onsite meals to seniors who participate in the program. Not only is the food delicious, but the program gives them an opportunity to socialize and make new friends. The program will now offer free games to check out, coloring books for adults, and classic television shows for everyone to enjoy. The program enhancements began May 1, 2023, and will be offered Monday through Friday from 11:00am to 12:30pm at the Garvey Center. Salute to Seniors – In honor of the month of May being recognized as Older Americans Month, Garvey Center hosted its Annual Salute to Seniors social event on Thursday, May 25, 2023, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Salute to Seniors is the event where the Garvey Center recognizes all of its senior volunteers and honors the 2023 Older American of the Year. The event included a delicious lunch, dessert, and entertainment provided by Bobby Z. Parks Commission Meeting June 6, 2023 Page 3 of 4 3 Older American of the Year – The Garvey Center nominated Hang Chi Fung for the 2023 Older American of the Year. Hang is 69 years young and he is a very active participant in the center’s programs. He is an active volunteer in the Senior Lunch Program, and he always comes in with a bright smile and warm greetings for everyone he encounters. Whenever he sees that people are having a difficult time communicating, he offers to help translate. While Hang Chi likes to enjoy his quiet time at the facility, he also likes to sit and accompany his fellow seniors when he sees that they are alone. He has a bright and positive energy that is contagious to everyone around him. Congratulations to Hang Chi Fung as our nominee for the 2023 Older American of the Year for Rosemead. SPECIAL EVENTS Anti-Hate Poetry Contest – Calling all young creative writers and aspiring poets! The City of Rosemead’s Anti-Hate Poetry Contest is open to students ages 5 to 17 years old who live in the City of Rosemead. All poems must include one of two writing themes: “Unity in the Community “or “Diversity is our Strength.” Submission forms for the Anti-Hate Poetry Contest are available online starting May 4, 2023, on the City of Rosemead website, search “Poetry Contest.” Poems will be judged on the following criteria: Interpretation of the Theme, Technical Skills, Originality, Creativity, and Uniqueness. All entries must be received by Wednesday, May 31, 2023, at 5:00pm. Winners will be recognized on June 13, 2021. Memorial Day - This year’s Memorial Day event took place on Monday, May 29, at 10:00 a.m. The City of Rosemead honored the men and women who have given their lives in the armed forces in service to this great nation. This year’s ceremony, which included the Presentation of Colors, the placing of the wreaths, and a performance of Taps, took place in the Civic Center Plaza. This event was free and open to the public. Farmers Market – On May 8, 2023, the Parks and Recreation staff were on-site at the Farmers Market from 5pm-9pm with a special Mother’s Day activity. Roughly 20 people enjoyed making an arts and crafts gift for Mother's Day. Families and individuals alike were amazed by the creativity of the papercraft flowers. All ages were excited to take their time in creating a lovely flower bouquet and card for their special guardian/parent. Families and individuals capped off their evening with bargains on merchandise and food while taking home their flower bouquets. Overall, suggestions were requested for the Parks and Recreation Department to attend often with more arts and crafts. Recap for Family Game Night – On May 19, 2023, the Rosemead Community Recreation Center hosted Family Game Night from 6:30pm-8:30pm. About 20 families attended the event. They participated in our M&M raffle, and the winner took home 615 M&M candies in a jar. Families engaged in our popular and family favorite, minute-to-win-it games, coloring pages, tic-tac-toe, PlayStation, and finally our Kahoot game created by part-time staff. Overall, families topped off the night with popcorn, red vines, cookies, and a choice of water or Capri-Sun. Those in attendance recommended hosting similar events in the future. Parks Commission Meeting June 6, 2023 Page 4 of 4 4 ADULT/YOUTH PROGRAMS AND SPORTS Spring 2023 Program Recap: Adult Basketball League - The Spring season will conclude their last regular season game on May 15 and 1st round of playoffs and championship will be scheduled for June 4 and June 11. The Summer league is set to kick off on June 25. Youth Futsal League – The Spring Youth Futsal League will conclude its season on June 3 with a total of 99 participants and 10 teams total. Spring Camp Rosemead – Spring Camp Rosemead was held on the weeks of April 3rd and 10th to accommodate both school districts. We had a total of 35 kids participate in weekly theme activities that included art & crafts, outdoor play, sports, and an excursion to Kids Empire. Youth Golf Lessons – The Spring Youth Golf Lessons will be concluding their session on the week of June 5th with a total of 24 participants. Summer session will begin on the week of July 9. Youth Tennis Lessons – The Spring Youth Tennis Lesson will be concluding their session on June 3 with a total of 41 participants. Summer Session will begin the week of June 12. Upcoming Summer Programs: Free Summer Lunch Program - Starting June 12th, children ages 17 and under are able to receive lunch Monday-Friday at both the Rosemead Aquatic Center and Garvey Park. Summer Camp Rosemead - Begins June 12th at Garvey Park. Children in 1st through 8th grade can enjoy 9 weeks of weekly themed crafts, activities, and excursions. Capacity for Camp Rosemead has also increased from 20-30 participants for this summer. Summer Youth Basketball League – Practices begin June 12th, and the first game is set for June 24th. Due to high demand, staff were able to add an additional 8 teams/80 participants in our C and D Divisions. The league will consist of a total of 24 teams with a full 240 participants. Start Smart - The Start Smart sports programs are designed to teach kids ages 3-5 years old the fundamental skills of sports. The summer session will kick off with Start Smart Baseball and Basketball beginning the week of June 12 and Soccer and Volleyball the week of July 31. The program is held at Garvey Park Gym on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30pm-6:30pm. New Adult Volleyball League – Beginning June 25th, the League will run Sunday nights in Garvey Park Gym between 6:30pm-9:30pm. New Adult Pickleball Flex League –We are proud to introduce our new Pickleball Flex League which gives players the ability to choose what days and times they would like to compete against their opponents. The League will begin June 25th.
