CC - Item 5B - Review and Discussion of Draft Website Redesign and New City DomainROSEMEAD CITY COUNCIL
STAFF REPORT
TO: THE HONORABLE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL
FROM: BEN KIM, CITY MANAGER
DATE: JULY 25, 2023
SUBJECT: REVIEW AND DISCUSSION OF DRAFT WEBSITE REDESIGN AND
NEW CITY DOMAIN
SUMMARY
The City of Rosemead website (www.cityofrosemead.org) is the primary communication tool for
residents, businesses, and visitors to access information regarding City services, community
events, and much more. On January 10, 2023, the City Council awarded a contract to Revize, LLC
to update the City's website. An internal working group comprised of staff from the City
Manager's Office, City Clerk's Office, and the Parks & Recreation Department have spent the past
several months working on a draft design. On April 25, 2023, the City Council reviewed the draft
design and provided additional feedback for improvement. On June 27, 2023, the City Council
requested some additional edits as well as examples of some of the interactive features that will be
included in the site. Therefore, it is recommended that the City Council review and approve the
draft website design and select a new domain.
The City's website design team has completed the recommended design changes that the City
Council requested at the April 25, 2023, City Council Meeting. Additionally, the City Council
requested that the website domain be changed from a .org to a .gov account. It should also be noted
that there is a bill in the California Assembly, AB 1637, that, "would require a local agency, as
defined, that maintains an internet website for use by the public to ensure that the internet website
utilizes a ".gov" top-level domain ... no later than January 1, 2026."
.gov is the top-level domain for US -based government organizations. The .gov registrar is where
.gov domains are managed. According to the registrar, city and county domains must include the
two -letter state abbreviation or clearly spell out the state name. Use of a hyphen is permitted but
not recommended. Additionally, for cities, use of "City of in the domain name is optional. Based
on the requirements, the City Council change the website name to:
www.CijyOfRosemeadCA.gov
www.RosemeadCA.eov

Selecting a new domain is relatively easy and can be implemented with the new site; however,
there is a cost to changing the City's domain used for email. For there to be little confusion from
the City website to staff's email address, the City's IT division will need to create new email
accounts for all users with the new domain. This will require changes to not just the City's email
licenses, but to servers, phones, and software used by employees. Additionally, all promotional
and outreach materials like flyers, brochures, business cards, etc. will need to be reprinted with the
correct information. Finally, all City vendor accounts will need to be updated with the correct
email information.
STAFF RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that the City Council review and approve the draft website design and select a
new website domain.
