AQUATICS
Winter Aquatics Programs - Aquatics current ongoing programs are Lap Swim, Aqua Fit, Adult Swim
Lessons, and our Rosemead Rapids Swim Team.
Lap Swim - Swimming is the best full body workout. Lap Swim takes place Monday through Friday 5:30
pm — 8:30 pm and Saturday 10:00 am —12:00 pm.
Aqua Fit — Water fitness is a great way to exercise. Come join our Aqua Fit class on Monday and
Wednesday 5:30 pm — 6:10 pm
Swim Team — The Rosemead Rapids Swim Team is currently practicing Monday through Friday 5:30 —
8:30 pm and Saturday 8:00 — 10:00am. Rosemead Rapids currently has 162 participants registered for
the month of February.
Swim Lessons Registration - Online registration will start at 8:00am on Monday March 4, 2024. Swim
lesson registrations will be taken online or in person on a first-come, first served basis. Participants are
encouraged to take a swim skills test prior to registration. Skills test can be taken Monday- Friday from
4:00pm-6:00pm at the Rosemead Aquatic Center. Participants will only be allowed to register for one
time slot. If a child is registered for a level that is not appropriate for their skill set, they will be
transferred to a class that is more appropriate, if space is available. If space is not available, a refund will
be issued minus a $5.00 administrative fee.
Lifeguard Training - Aquatic staff are preparing to host a lifeguard training course on February 23-25 at
the Rosemead Aquatic Center. This course provides participants with the knowledge and skills to
prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies. Participants who attend all sessions of this
course will obtain their American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification First Aid and CPR/AED for
Professional Rescuer valid for 2 years.
Aquatic Recruitment — Aquatic staff, along with Human Resources, are currently working on recruiting
for the summer of 2024. We are looking to hire Aquatic Attendants, Lifeguards, Lifeguard/Swim

Instructors, Assistant Pool Managers, and Recreation leaders. In addition to offering an incentive
program, the City of Rosemead will be hosting a Job fair on Saturday, February 24, 2024.
FACILITIES/PARKS
Garvey Park
Tennis Courts/Pickleball Courts — The renovated tennis courts are not open at Garvey Park. In addition
to the resurfacing of the tennis courts, the City created a hybrid tennis court that consists of 4 pickleball
courts. Pickleball play is designated on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday from 5:00 to 9:30 pm
and Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm. 4. With the new additions of the
pickleball courts at Garvey Park Tennis Courts, Johnny Allen Tennis is now offering youth pickleball
lessons for youth and adults! Class will be held Monday evenings, and we currently have 2 kids
registered for the program.
Garvey Community Center
Senior Bingo - The monthly bingo social was held on Wednesday February 7, 2024. Attendees were
served pasta, fresh popcorn, and beverages. A total of 10 bingo games are played per session. Each
bingo winner received a $5 gift card. The final coverall bingo game winner received a $20 gift card to
Target. In total approximately twenty-five seniors participated in the program this month.
Senior Craft Class - The Garvey Senior Center hosted a senior craft class on Monday, February 12th, in
which each participant made a Valentine's Day themed craft project. In total, twenty-six seniors took
part in the activity. The next craft class will be on Monday, March 11, from 12:00pm to 1:00pm.
Senior Lunch Program - The Senior Lunch Program has been a staple in the lives of seniors in the
Rosemead community. The program supplies nutritious prepared onsite meals to seniors who
participate in the program. Not only is the food delicious, but the program gives seniors an opportunity
to socialize and make new friends. The program is offered Monday through Friday, from 11:00am to
12:30pm at the Garvey Center. The program averages 35 participants per day.
Case Management Services - The City of Rosemead is now offering Senior Case Management Services
through YWCA San Gabriel Valley senior services. Case management services are offered to seniors 60
years and older, frail or disabled adults aged 18-59. The case management program will provide a broad
array of services with the goal of having seniors remain in their homes for as long as possible. The
program services will include but are not limited to, access to services such as transportation, case
management, information, and assistance; and in-home services such as personal care, chore, and
homemaker assistance. In addition, community services such as referrals to legal, mental health, and
adult day care services. The case management services will be provided on Tuesdays, once a week at the
Garvey Center, beginning mid to late November 2023. For more information or to inquire about a future

SENIOR TRIPS
Return of the Vegas Rat Pack Tribute Show - On Monday, February 19, the senior excursion program
ventured out to Long Beach to experience the iconic musical trio tribute of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin,
and Sammy Davis Jr. The excursion included a sit-down lunch with dessert and beverage. The show
featured the Rat Pack's celebrated songs and humor, playful banter, and camaraderie! The trip had a
total of Twenty (20) seniors taking part in the excursion.
ABBA Tribute - The Senior excursion program will venture out to downtown Palm Springs and Palm
Desert on Tuesday February 27. The trip will stop in downtown Palm Springs for some shopping and
lunch on their own. After lunch the trip will proceed to the Dell Webb Sun City Art theater in Palm
Desert for an afternoon with a musical tribute to ABBA. Participants will be treated to relive the global
sensation with their classic hits including Dancing Queen, S.O.S and various hits for Mama Mia! The trip
is sold out with a total of fifty-four (54) seniors taking part in the excursion.
SPECIAL EVENTS
Sweethearts Jamboree - Everyone's favorite event, the Sweethearts Jamboree returned to the
Rosemead Community Center for a day of fun filled on Saturday, February 17, 2024. The Valentines
themed event included bingo, lunch, raffles, dancing, and a special recognition for all the special
sweethearts in attendance. The list of sweethearts are as follows:

The event included a sit-down lunch consisting of garden salad, roast beef, fresh vegetables, and
cheesecake for dessert. The event culminated with a line dancing in room one and traditional dance for
all to enjoy and partake in. The Bobby Z band provided musical entertainment with a mix of classic Latin
and top 40 hits. Approximately one hundred fifty seniors participated in the event!
Youth In Government - Students in Rosemead get a first-hand look at how government works! The
program is designed to get students involved in government on a local level. Selected students will
participate in a shadow day, shadowing City Officials and staff, and on the second day, a City tour
and mock City Council meeting will be held in the Council Chambers at City Hall. Subjects addressed
each day may include matters such as community engagement, decisions on infrastructure, and
budget. Youth in Government Day builds political acumen and self-confidence through public
speaking and interaction.

For an opportunity to participate in this special two-day event, students must complete an online
application before March 4"', and meet the following requirements: Must be a High School Junior or
Senior, live in the City of Rosemead and Be in good academic standing. The program will take place
both March 21" (Shadow Day from 3:00 to 6:00 pm) and April 11th (Youth in Government Day Tour
and Mock City Council Meeting from 12:00 to 7:00 pm)
St. "Paw"trick's Day Celebration —Save the date and join us on Saturday, March 16 between 10am-2pm
at the Garvey Paws Dog Park to celebrate our 1 -year anniversary. The event is a St. Patrick's theme
"PAW"ty with costume contests, pet vendors (PetSmart, SGVCOG, United Petcare, Etc.), crafts and food
trucks for both humans and dogs by Fuego Me Up and Woof it Up.
ADULT/YOUTH PROGRAMS AND SPORTS
Youth Sports:
Youth Volleyball Clinic — Our youth volleyball clinic is currently halfway through the Winter session with
a total of 43 kids in the program. The clinic is held on Friday evenings between 530-830pm at Temple
Intermediate School.
Youth Tennis Lesson — Winter Youth Tennis Lesson session #2 concluded on February 15 with a total of
20 participants. Session #3 began on Tuesday, February 19 and currently has 11 registered in the class.
The class is held on Tuesday and Thursday evening at the newly renovated Garvey Park Tennis Courts.
Youth Basketball League —The Winter Youth Basketball League has been in full swing since January 22
and the league is full with 16 teams and 160 participants in the league. Practices are held Monday
through Thursday at Garvey Intermediate Gym between 530-930pm. Games are held on Saturdays at
Garvey Park Gym.
SCMAF-SGV Youth Basketball Tournament — Rosemead is excited to participate in the annual SCMAF-
SGV Youth Basketball Tournament again this year! The City of Azusa will be hosting the tournament this
year and teams from different cities around the San Gabriel Valley will compete against each other for a
chance to move on to the SCMAF Federation Tournament. This year, Rosemead Staff will invite 2 players
from each team in Div. A -C to participate in the tournament. The single elimination tournament will be
hosted during the week of March 11-17.
Adult Sports:
Adult Basketball League —The Winter Adult Basketball League halfway through their season with a full 8
teams. The top 4 teams will advance to the playoffs which will begin on Sunday, March 10th, and
Championship on March 17. The Spring season will kick off on April 7.
Adult Volleyball Open Gym —The department is offering FREE open gym volleyball for adults ages 18+.
Open gym is held Sunday evenings between 630-930pm at Garvey Park Gym. We currently have 80
participants registered for this quarter.

MISCELLANEOUS:
Outstanding Older American of the Year Nominations - Nominations are now open of this year's
Outstanding Older American of the Year. Nominees for the award need to be actively involved in service
to others in the Rosemead community and sixty years and older. Nomination forms will be available at
the Garvey Community Center and other public counters. The last day to nominate an outstanding older
American is March 25, 2024.
City of Rosemead Student Anti -Hate Art Contest - The City of Rosemead's Student Anti -Hate Art
Contest was open to students ages 5 to 17 years old who live in the City of Rosemead. Artis had the
choice of two themes, "Colors Should Never Divide Us' or "Be the Rainbow to someone's Cloudy Day'.
The Anti -Hate Art contest began on August 21, and closed on Friday November 3, 2023. The City
received a total of twelve (12) for this year's contest. Artwork was judged on the following criteria:
Interpretation of the Theme, Technical Skills, Originality, Creativity and Uniqueness. This year the city
added digital media as a new platform for students to express their creativity.
The Anti -Hate Art Contest winners were recognized at the January 23rd City Council meeting. The
winners in each respective category are as follows; In Group A; Jayden Chen 3rd grade from Janson
Elementary School, he submitted "Love Not Hate" on paper, crayons, and pencil. The winner of Group B
was Evelyn Chen 5th grade from Janson Elementary School she submitted "Spread Love Not Hate" on
paper using color pencils. The final winner in group C was Jayla Suchite 8th grade from Garvey
Intermediate. Jalya used Procreate digital art program to create "We Grow Together". The winning
artwork will be on display at the Rosemead Community Center as well. Congratulations to all the
winners!
