SUBJECT: DISCUSSION AND DIRECTION REGARDING REALIGNMENT OF
TERM ROTATION FOR MAYOR AND MAYOR PRO TEM
At the request of Mayor Steven Ly, he would like to revisit the discussion to realign the Mayor
and Mayor Pro Tem rotation from June to December 2024 to coincide with the statewide general
municipal election cycles in November.
BACKGROUND
On October 12, 2021, the City Council adopted Ordinance No. 1003, changing the City's General
Municipal Election date from the first Tuesday after the first Monday in March to June to
coincide with the statewide primary election in response to Senate Bill (SB) 970.
On February 22, 2022, the City Council, in a consensus, agreed to move the reorganization
rotation from March to June to align with the staggered municipal election cycle of June 2022 as
a result of SB 970.
On September 26, 2023, the City Council adopted Ordinance No. 1019, amending Municipal
Code Section 1.12.010, moving the date of the City's General Municipal Election from the
Statewide Primary of even -numbered years to the Statewide General Election in even -numbered
years beginning with the November 3, 2026, election.
STAFF RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that the City Council discuss and provide further direction.
