LAST WEEK CHIMER CAAWEEK The Rosemead SAO deputies have recently been conducting high visibility supplemental patrol services for the early morning hours. During one early morning shift, a Rosemead SAO deputy conducted a patrol check of a residential area located near Ivar Avenue and Grand Avenue. One male Hispanic was detained on a bike after being observed possibly prowling near several parked cars. During the detention, the male was found to be on Federal Probation for drug smuggling. He was subsequently arrested for possession of burglary tools after being found in possession of shaved vehicles keys. what are shaved keys? ["Altered or shaved key" is any key altered, by cutting, filing, or other means, to fit multiple vehicles or vehicles other than the vehicles for which the key was originally manufactured.] • A shaved key has had its teeth filed down so the tooth pattern no longer exactly matches the authorized coding for the vehicle. • Regular keys have intact teeth cut to the precise coding pattern that the vehicle's locks and ignition require. • Thieves create shaved keys by filing legitimate keys to modify the tooth pattern coding enough to bypass security. • Some vehicles may still start with slightly shaved keys if the filing only alters tooth tips and maintains some contact points. • The difference is regular keys have intact coding patterns while shaved keys have altered patterns through tooth filing. • Shaved keys exploit vulnerabilities in systems relying only on tooth pattern coding by duplicating key appearance while changing the internal pattern. • Newer transponder and immobilizer technologies offer stronger protections against shaved key attempts on modern vehicles. • Older vehicles remain at risk if owners do not routinely change door locks and replace keys. • In summary, shaved keys have modified tooth patterns allowing operation despite not precisely coding to the vehicle. • Regular keys precisely match the vehicle's required tooth pattern coding for authorized access and use. During the overnight suppression, Rosemead SAO continue to conduct patrol checks of different locations throughout the city including enforcing /citing for local park curfews and Letter of Agency for business. The overall goal is to deter, prevent and enhance safety in a positive way for the residents of Rosemead. Often times, their Loss Prevention employees contact us directly when they believe a theft is about to occur or is occurring. On this particular day, Rosemead SAO deputies responded to "Target' regarding a female Hispanic wearing a gray sweater who was concealing items in a large duffle bag. As soon as the female exited the store, Rosemead SAO deputies contacted the female and detained her. As a result, one pink "Barbie" t -shirt was recovered and returned to the store.
