CC - 1972 - 30 - Supply of Natural Gas to LA County not be Reduced• 0 RESOLUTION NO. 72-30 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ROSEMEAD, CALIFORNIA URGING APPROPRIATE ACTION TO ASSURE THAT THE SUPPLY OF NATURAL GAS TO LOS ANGELES COUNTY NOT BE REDUCED, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ROSEMEAD DOES HEREBY RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS: WHEREAS, Los Angeles County more than twelve years ago was the first jurisdiction in the nation to outlaw the burning of high sulfur fuel oil for the purpose of controlling air pollution; and WHEREAS, power plants in Los Angeles County rely on natural gas and low sulfur fuel, oil to eliminate ai pollution consisting of 455 tons per day of sulfur dioxide, 40 tons per day of particulates, and 205 tons per day of oxides of.nitrogen; and WHEREAS, no other technologically feasible means to accomplish this control strategy is available; and WHEREAS, the El Paso Natural Gas Company presently is seeking approval of the Federal Power Commission for a plan for curtailing deliveries of natural gas, which plan will either severly reduce or completely eliminate the amount of natural gas available to power plants in Los Angeles County; and WHEREAS, the world supply of low sulfur fuel oil is tenuous and there is a strong likelihood that if natural gas is completely curtailed, power plants in Los Angeles County will have to burn as much as 70 mi9lion barrels of high sulfur fuel oil yearly; and WHEREAS, the burning of large quantities of high sulfur fuel oil will result in atmospheric pollution of such severity as to damage property and cause illness; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the President of the United States, members of Congress representing Los Angeles County and the Environmental Protecti:onr; Agency be called upon to take all appropriate action to assure that the supply of natural gas to Los Angeles County is not reduced, PASSED, APPROVED AND ADOPTED THIS 18th DAY OF APRIL, 1972, ATTEST:
