A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF ROSEMEAD SUPPORTING PASSAGE OF H.R.2009,
CITED AS LOU GEHRIG'S DISEASE (ALS) RESEARCH,
TREATMENT, AND ASSISTANCE ACT OF 1997
WHEREAS, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as Lou Gehrig's
Disease, is a progressive neuromuscular disease leading to the wasting of
muscles, paralysis, and eventual death, and
WHEREAS, Approximately 30,000 individuals in the United States are afflicted with ALS
at any time, with approximately 5,000 new cases appearing each year, and
WHEREAS, ALS usually strikes individuals who are 50 years of age or older, and
WHEREAS, The life expectancy of an individual with ALS is three to five years, and
WHEREAS, Aggressive treatment of the symptoms of ALS can extend the lives of those
with the disease. Recent advances in ALS research have produced promising
leads, many related to shared disease processes that appear to operate in
many neurodegenerative diseases,, and
WHEREAS, It is the purpose of this act to assist afflicted individuals by:
(1) Waiver of 24-month waiting period for Medicare coverage
(2) Medicare coverage of drugs to treat ALS
(3) Increased federal funds for research into ALS
NOW, THEREFORE, The City Council of the City of Rosemead, in order to help those
afflicted with ALS and related neurological diseases, as well as their families, and all
others who share its concern for adequate treatment and research which will result in the
discovery of some form of amelioration, if not a cure for ALS, urges all local area
congressional representatives to support passage of this most important bill which was
introduced by the late Honorable Walter Capps, and cosponsored by 138 Congress
members.
