CC - 1995-23 - Supporting the Long Beach Naval ShipyardRESOLUTION NO. 95-23 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ROSEMEAD SUPPORTING THE CONTINUED OPERATIONS OF THE LONG BEACH NAVAL SHIPYARD AND OTHER SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA MILITARY FACILITIES WHEREAS, the State of California has endured billions of dollars in losses through a disproportionate share of Department of Defense closures as mandated by the Federally appointed Base Closures and Realignment Commissions in 1988, 1991 and 1993; and WHEREAS, it has been documented that the State of California has suffered more than its share of economic devastation during the current worldwide recession, and will be the last of the states to show signs of a positive recovery; and WHEREAS, the State of California has sustained both human and natural disasters in recent years from earthquakes in San Francisco and Los Angeles areas, fires in Northern and Southern California, and from the civil unrest in the greater Los Angeles area; and WHEREAS, the State of California through its world preminence in the technologies of earth and space travel, military defense systems and interglobal communications has been the free world's greatest guarantor of peace through strength of leadership; and WHEREAS, the Southern California region has suffered significant job losses due to federally mandated base closures in 1991-1993; and WHEREAS, 970 private sector businesses will be affected by the closure of Long Beach Naval Shipyard. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of Rosemead supports the continued operations of the Long Beach Naval Shipyard and all other military facilities in the Southern California region and will transmit this resolution to the President of the United States and the members of the State of California Congressional delegation in Washington, D.C.; and BE IT FURTHER RESOVED by the City Rosemead that the City Clerk certify the adoption of this Resolution.
