CC - 1993-36 - Opposing Aerial Spraying of Malathion0 • RESOLTUION NO. 93-36 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ROSEMEAD OPPOSING THE AERIAL SPRAYING OF MALATHION AS A METHOD OF ERADICATING MEDITERRANEAN AND MEXICAN FRUIT FLIES IN CALIFORNIA WHEREAS, the California Department of Food and Agriculture initiated a 45-day public comment and review period for a draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR) regarding the aerial application of malathion and bait for the eradication of fruit fly pests; and WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Rosemead feels strongly that the Department of Food and Agriculture has not addressed adequately all health and environmental concerns associated with the aerial application of malathion; and WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Rosemead voted to approve Resolution No. 90-12 on February 13, 1990 requesting that the aerial spraying of malathion be suspended in Los Angeles County; and WHEREAS, since that time, studies have indicated that the use of biological eradication methods, such as the use of sterile insects, have proven to be effective deterrents to infestations; and WHEREAS, the members of the City Council feel strongly that it is the responsibility of government to protect the public health, safety, and welfare. NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved by the City Council of the City of Rosemead declares as follows: Section 1. Members of the City Council oppose the plans of the Department of Food and Agriculture to use the aerial application of malathion to eradicate fruit fly pests in California. Section 2. Members of the City Council urge the Department of Food and Agriculture to explore and develop more extensive biological techniques, such as the use of sterile insects, in eradicating fruit fly pests. Section 3. The City Clerk is hereby directed to forward this Resolution to the Department of Food and Agriculture in accordance with its 45 day review period of the draft EIR.
