CC - 1996-30 - Proclaming September 23-27, 1996 as Lawsuit Abuse Awareness week/4 0 RESOLUTION NO. 96-30 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ROSEMEAD PROCLAIMING SEPTEMBER 23RD - SEPTEMBER 27, 1996 AS LAWSUIT ABUSE AWARENESS WEER WHEREAS, each lawsuit filed in the State of California costs taxpayers $500, and a minimum of $8,000 more if that lawsuit goes to trial; and WHEREAS, two-thirds of auto related claims in the State of California are phony or exaggerated, costing responsible California motorists an additional $250 per year in automobile insurance premiums; and WHEREAS, wrongful termination lawsuits in the State of California have reduced hiring levels in the state between four and five percent (4-5%), costing California over 650,000 jobs and deterring business from locating here; and WHEREAS, in 1992 alone, 850,000 new civil lawsuits were filed in the State of California, 110,000 of which sought damage awards; and WHEREAS, polytechnic companies in the State of California have delayed, or suspended, the development of lifesaving technology due to the threat of product liability suits; and WHEREAS, California had more multi-million dollar verdicts awarded between 1990 and 1993 than any other state; and WHEREAS, the California Chamber of Commerce and ninety-six percent (96%) of California business leaders agree that the civil justice system is out of control and needs to be reformed. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mayor of the City of Rosemead, do hereby proclaim the week of September 23rd through September 27, 1996, Lawsuit Abuse Awareness Week and commend Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse for fighting this societal problem through a public education campaign in the hopes of affecting change in the public's attitude and behavior towards frivolous lawsuits.
