CC - 1988-19 - Declaring March 1988 as Anmesty monthRESOLUTION NO. 88-19 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ROSEMEAD DECLARING MARCH 1988, AS "AMNESTY MONTH" WHEREAS, the United States Congress enacted the Immigration Reform and Control Act on November 6, 1986, which allows illegal aliens a chance to legalize their status; and WHEREAS, the anmesty program permits individuals who entered the United States prior to January 1, 1982, and who have resided continuously as illegal aliens since that date an opportunity to apply for legalized status; and WHEREAS, there are currently many individuals living and working in the United States without benefit of citizenship, and who have not applied for benefits provided in the Immigration Reform and Control Act; and WHEREAS, due to. the confidentiality provisions of this unique legislation, no information provided on the amnesty application will be used to deport an applicant or non-qualifying family member; and WHEREAS, because this program will not be extended and no applications will be accepted after May 4, 1988; and WHEREAS, all qualified illegal aliens are urged to apply for this opportunity to legalize their status and continue to live and work in the United States without fear; and NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved that the City of Rosemead encourages all persons living in the United States without benefit of citizenship to exercise the opportunity that this law provides by applying for amnesty during March 1988, "Amnesty Month." PASSED, APPROVED, and ADOPTED this 22nd day of March, 1988.
