A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
ROSEMEAD OPPOSING CONSTRUCTION OF A NEW HIGH SCHOOL
IN ROSEMEAD AND URGING THE ALHAMBRA SCHOOL DISTRICT
TO EXPLORE FEASIBLE ALTERNATE SITES THROUGHOUT THE
DISTRICT
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Rosemead believes and
strongly supports our public education system; and
WHEREAS, within the Alhambra School District there currently
exists a need to construct a new high school to alle-
viate overcrowding; and
WHEREAS, the City Council believes that the majority of the
students to be in this school reside in areas outside
the corporate limits of the City of Rosemead; and
WHEREAS, the education process is facilitated when students
attend schools close to their homes; and
WHEREAS, the education process is inhibited when students must
be bussed or walk long distances to their schools; and
WHEREAS, all sites presently under consideration for this new
high school are located within the corporate limits of
the City of Rosemead; and
WHEREAS, the City Council feels that any new construction of
a school facility should be located in the area from
which the greatest number of students reside or the
greatest residential growth is occuring; and
WHEREAS, it is the obligation as Councilmembers to make Rosemead
a better place, not only to attend school, but also to
live; and
WHEREAS, the present site location of the high school is planned
for an area that will cause some 350 to 400 families to
lose their homes; and
WHEREAS, the Rosemead City_Council believes that the need for a
high school does not offset the dislocation that will
be experienced by these families who are desirous of
remaining Rosemead residents; and
WHEREAS, neither the City Council nor the residents.of.Rosemead
have been given the opportunity to be heard prior to
decision making by the Alhambra School board.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF ROSEMEAD:
1. Urges the Alhambra School District expand its search
to include all possible sites within the district;
including those outside the City.of Rosemead; and
2. Hereby informs the Alhambra School District of the
City's intention to oppose, at all appropriate ad-
ministrative and judicial levels, the acquisition
of property and construction of a high school that
would displace Rosemead residents or businesses.
3. Directs that a copy of this Resolution be trans-
mitted to the Alhambra School District Board of
Education, Garvey School Board, State Allocation
Board and the California State Board of Education.
