CC - Item 4B - Authorization to Attend 2005 Intercontintental ConferenceL TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND MEMBERS ROSEMEAD CITY COUNCIL FROM: vllli CROWE, CITY MANAGER DATE: FEBRUARY 2, 2005 • RE: AUTHORIZATION TO ATTEND 2005 INTERCONTINENTAL CONFERENCE ON TERRORISM AND ASIAN ORGANIZED CRIME, MAY 2-6,2005, LOS ANGELES Attached for your consideration is information regarding the aforementioned conference. In the past, the City Council has authorized the attendance of our two special assignment deputies, Manuel Valenzuela and Jose Zarate and Mayor Pro-Tem Imperial. The Asian Gang Investigator's Association of California and the Los Angeles Police Department have agreed to jointly host the conference which will provide networking, training, and education on combating and preventing the rise of terrorism, organized crime, and street gangs. The :Ay LAPDONLINE conference venue will be at the Wilshire Grand Hotel, Los Angeles, Ca., in May 2-6, 2005. The conference will provide networking, training, and education on combating and preventing the rise of OCGIA terrorism, organized crime, and street gangs. We are estimating about 700-1000 attendees from twenty-five different countries 2005 lb CONFERENCE attending this conference. HOTEL INFO The Asian Gang Investigators' Association of California (AGIAC) 2005 was founded in 1989 as a non-profit organization to foster CONFERENCE ' relationships and networking among the various investigative units REGISTRATION working Asian crime and gangs throughout California. Over the FORM years, AGIAC has grown to include members across the nation and internationally. Membership is limited to law enforcement personnel, including corrections, prosecutors, parole, and probation. AGIAC interacts with other law enforcement organizations across the country to assist in a coordinated strategy on investigating and prosecuting Organized crime, Asian gangs, Terrorism, and as a forum for training, and development of the exchange of critical information involving Asian criminal enterprises. Since the 9-11 incident in New York City, our association AGIAC has strived to better serves the needs of the law enforcement community by providing quality training in Terrorism and Asian Organized Crime that will equip and assist members in combating this proliferating crime trend in a proficient and professional manner. The Asian Gang Investigator's Association of California (AGIAC) along with the Los Angeles Police Dept. (LAPD) will collaboratively host the conference together, in the City of Los Angeles.
