RE: PURCHASE OF PARKING CONTROL VEHICLES
Last June, the Agency and the Council approved funding for the
purchase of a replacement parking control vehicle. It was agreed at
that time that the Agency will fund 30% of the vehicle, and that the
City would pay for the additional 70%.
Originally, staff planned to purchase a Ford Ranger pick-up, convert
it to right-hand drive, and modify the driver's side door to allow
the City's Parking Control Officers to mark tires. However, staff
has been informed by several dealers that a white 1988 Ford Ranger is
not available and that the new 1989 models will not be available for
at least two months. In addition, the City would be subject to a
two-month wait for converting the truck once it was received.
Because that type of wait seemed unreasonable, staff.researched..other...,,,,.,,,.
options for purchasing parking control vehicles. In turn, it was
` discovered that an automobile dealer in Costa Mesa has been
successful in converting used Chevrolet Chevettes to right-hand drive
vehicles for use as parking control vehicles. The references
provided by the dealer speak highly of the vehicles.
Attached is a letter from the dealer offering to sell two 1985
Chevettes, with approximately 35,000 miles, to the City/Agency for
$8,000 each, plus tax and license fees. One vehicle would cost
$8,500, plus tax and license fees. The vehicles would be covered by
a 30-day warranty covering the basic drive train. One vehicle would
be available for immediate delivery, and a second would be available
in approximately two-weeks. The purchase of the vehicles would be
subject to the approval of the mechanic responsible for the
maintenance of City vehicles.
It is recommended that the Council authorize 70% of the funds
necessary to purchase two right-hand drive Chevrolet Chevettes from
Len Morgan Motors, Inc.

I thank you very much for your anticipated order for one of our con-
verted right hand drive Chevrolet Chevettes.
The vehicles that we have discussed are 1985 Chevrolet Chevettes that
have approximately 35,000 miles. The cars will be equipped as follows:
-1. GM-type rack and pinion
-2. Completely safety checked including new tires, brakes,
hoses and belts
-3. Revolving safety beacon
-4. Front to rear interior tray
-5. And-many other specially designed features that are
applicable to this vehicle
-6. Will not have air conditioning or power steering
The pricing will be $8500.00 + sales tax and license for one(1) vehicle,
and $16,000 + sales tax and license for two(2). These cars will come
with a 30-day warranty covering the basic drive train.
