RETIRED MANAGERS RECOGNITION AWARD FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF DIVERSE COMMUNITIES JOHN H. NAIL AWARD KEYNOTE ADDRESS: FUTURE LEADERSHIP MODELS Our world seems increasingly chaotic. But is it really? Is there an order we don't see, one that we can understand and harness? And what is the role of the city in creating an order that allows people to live good lives? Our cities are the public elements closest to people, where they live and hopefully prosper. Cities themselves are going through significant change, especially here in California. Can we see these changes and the opportunities they present in a new light - from new perspectives - so we can develop new responses and lead (hopefully in the servant leadership sense) people to better deliberations and actions. We will explore these watershed ideas with world- renowned management consultant Margaret Wheatley, researcher, author and adviser to leading organizations around the globe. Don't miss this unique opportunity to stretch your thinking and you future. Speaker: Margaret J. Wheatley, President, Berkana Institute, Provo, Utah Concurrent Sessions I. KEYNOTE FOLLOW -UP Following Margaret Wheatly's presentation, a panel of practitioners will give their perspective on Wheatly's comments and view of what future leaders will need to succeed. II. FINDING SOLUTIONS TO REGIONAL NEEDS IN YOUR COMMUNITY: THE ROLE OF THE CITY MANAGER As population and urban densities continue to increase, concern has been raised about the ability of city government to effectively address issues that cut across jurisdictional boundaries (i.e, affordable housing, air quality, water quality, traffic and transportation). Cities, under the stewardship of city managers, have traditionally and vigorously resisted options that shift control over land use, transportation and infrastructure to regional entities. This session will look at several models for altering how regional decision - making occurs against the backdrop of determining the appropriate role of the city manager in this debate. 111. ETHICS /HOSTILE WORK ENVIRONMENT IV. WE'RE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER: HOW CITY MANAGERS CAN MAXIMIZE THEIR 'USE' OF ASSISTANT CITY MANAGERS AND IMPROVE THEIR SUPPORT SYSTEMS The City Manager's role is changing and in many mays becoming more demanding. The purpose of this panel is to explore the question of whether City Managers have an opportunity to more productively use their Assistants as a way to prevent spreading themselves too thin. The panel will also discuss ways to build the relationship between City Managers and Assistants to make such delegation successful and create a mutual support system.
