TRIPEPI, CITY MANAGE' R DATE: APRIL 23, 2002 RE: ROSEMEAD REBELS FOOTBALL - BANNER SIGN FUNDING REQUEST Councilmember Imperial has requested this item be placed on the agenda for funding consideration. The Rosemead Rebels have requested that the City purchase, on their behalf, banners that announce youth football sign-ups. The street banners would be placed at City expense on the two city banner poles on Garvey Avenue. The estimated cost is $3,000 per 60' by 5' banner. The requested script is as follows: SIGN'-UPS FOR ROSEMEAD REBELS YOUTH FOOTBALL YOUTH AGES 8 TO 15 SATURDAY, [DATE], [TIME], [LOCATION] FOR FURTHER INFORMATION TELEPHONE [626.555.1212] RECOMMENDATION: If the City Council approves this funding request for sign banners, it is recommended that funding be taken from appropriated reserves. ROSEMEAD REBELS FOOTBALL - BANNER SIGN FUNDING REQUEST Jess Gonzalez, 3856 N. Bartlett, Rosemead, spoke on behalf of the Rosemead Rebels Football organization. Mr. Gonzalez noted several former Rebels that have gone on to attain success in their fields. Mr. Gonzales stated the Rebels have an aggressive recruiting program. However, their flyers are not always distributed at the school level and many kids are unaware of their program. Mr. Gonzales stated that hanging a sign-up banner across Garvey Avenue would benefit their recruitment program. Discussion ensued about the size of the banner. It was agreed that the banner would be 4' x 30'. Councilman Imperial congratulated Mr. Gonzalez for all of his efforts and hard work overthe years and for turning out outstanding citizens. 1\ MOTION BY COUNCILMAN IMPERIAL, SECOND BY MAYOR PRO TEM VASQUEZ that the Council approve the request for a sign banner and that funding be taken from appropriated reserves. Councilman Taylor stated he spoke with staff after the last Council about the hundreds of tons of asphalt that are being dumped into the gravel pits at the Peck Road water basin settling area. Mr. Taylor questioned why an oil product is being dumped there. The memo he received in response dealt with the asphalt being stored for MTA purposes, which is at another location. Mr. Taylor stated that the water in the rock quarries is part of the water table, and cited as an example what a gallon of gas does to millions of gallons of water. CCMIN:4.23-02 Page n4
